Feel free to write a howto with less information if you think there is "too much information" available :P

This is what it says when I click the connect slow init button, it also says : Failed to read test echo from FTDI device. Make sure the cable is in dumb mode and connected to the OBD port.  Thoughts?

get a real xp machine and make sure your cable works properly with that.

yeah i followed the step by step in the wiki, plugged it in picked the slow speed etc and it said that.  If it is picking up the cable in ME7 does that mean my driver is set up correctly? or could their still be issues there?

Take notes, and when you have all the basic answers, post them here and make a new summarized FAQ :)

I wouldn't be worried if you don't understand everything after a week. I've been reading this site and S4wiki for 6 months now. Still dont understand half of it but I'm slowly getting the basics covered.

No one has written a simple how-to because, well, this isn't simple stuff. It takes lots of reading, learning, understanding and above else, it takes a lot of time. Human brain cannot absorb this much new information all at once. Patience is a requirement.

Title: OK guys, I have put in the work / research, please help me diagnose the issue.

I am getting "Failed to read test echo from FTDI device make sure device is plugged into OBD and in dumb mode"

I'm using comm port 3,
the driver installed is FTDI 2.8.30.0.
It says the device plugged in is FTDIBUS/VID_0403+PID_6001+A9YXP7ZVA\0000.

Is this a cable issue or driver issue?

I installed VCDS lite to check and see if that worked but I downloaded the most recent version which i don't think is the right version for an Ebay cable? but when i tested it in VCDS i got

Port status: ok
Interface: Not found

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again,
Jake

In both cases you're not connected to a powered ECU.

But what if I am? i'm plugged in and the key was turned on..... why would my ECU not have power?

Is the MIL lit?

Are you sure your OBD port is functional?

MIL=light on the cable? yes its on, would that mean OBD port is good to go?

MIL is "malfunction indicator light" on cluster (also known as "check engine light" or CEL)

but yea, the light on the cable means its good to go. Something else is wrong, unfortunately.

Yeah i have no CEL light and the light on the cord itself is on.  Any other thoughts? did you guys check out the information i put up above? listing the driver and the device i'm using? does that look correct?

Title: Re: Could not open FTDI device NEWB help please
Post by: nyet on August 22, 2013, 11:19:44 AM
Yeah i have no CEL light

The CEL light should be on if the ignition is on and the cable is plugged into the OBDII

Can you "licensing -> save info to file" and "licensing -> check if fdti devices support licensing" and attach the output?

Also, download and install FT_Prog... we can get more information about what cable you have using that.

http://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Utilities.htm#FT_Prog

hit f5 (or devices->scan and parse) and post a screenshot of what you see

You can also "hover" over the ftdi device as described here
