Title: strange problem 03 GLI 1.8T
Post by: vwnut8392 on June 18, 2020, 12:30:57 PM
was helping a friend with an 03 jetta GLI 1.8T that he recently bought cheap. its problem is that it seems to brick its own ECU. now i can recover it through boot mode every time so the processor is still responding but every time i reflash the ECU in boot mode it will start an run the car one time than once the car is shut off and turned back on the ECU stops responding with no check engine light. once that happens i pull the ECU, flash a file back on in boot mode it will start up and run again one more time. i have tried 2 different ECU's with the same end result. not sure what is going on here at all and any insight would be great. i know the car is supposed to have 06A 906 032RN ECU but it had 06A 906 032SL ECU. tests ECU's i had sitting around where 06A 906 032 HS. only thing i didnt test is putting one of the supposed bricked ECU's into my 02 jetta GLS 1.8T to see if the ECU responded and if it was the GLI just not recognizing the ECU. any insight would be great if anyone else has seen this problem before.

yes it appears to respond after being off power for short period of time than when the car is ran once it does not respond anymore.

i flashed with MMPS V18 originally over OBD and thats when the problem started. i recovered it with bench flashing but the problem still persists. the ECU is 032SL but it was flashed with a 032HS file. when i opened the 032SL ECU it smelled like it had an electronics failure so i put a real 032HS computer in the car that was known good but still same result.

does the nef flasher work with your ecu?

if you can successfully recover in boot mode after you recover it, don't start the car. just flash the ecu over obd with nefmoto with the respective bin file that you need for your ecu.

i ended up replacing the ECU again and the car has been fine ever since. so it leads me to believe that the other ECU's had issues.
