Early A6 2.7T's 4B0907551T were rated at 230HP, while 2.7T Allroads 4Z7907551R of the same vintage were 250HP (with corresponding higher torque). Is this difference 100% from tuning (different factory maps) or are there some engine HW differences between the A6 and the Allroad 2.7T?

Thanks,

There may be a few exceptions to this (I recall coming across some allroad files that should've been APB based on model year but had the 4Z7 prefix), but generally the 4B0 ECUs are APB engines and 4Z7 ECUs are BEL engines. There are (minor) hardware differences between the two engine types, but the APB S4s had ~260HP which would lead me to believe the difference is mainly tuning based.

Thanks. So if the hardware is essentially the same, seems to me you could apply a factory stock 260HP .bin to a 230HP car and have a factory STAGE 1 tune. Thinking the TIP A6 LBox (stock) might be a candidate.  Just thinking this could work if I don't cross the APB/BEL boundary.
Thank you.

Yeah that should work. You may need to recode your cluster, I'm not 100% sure but that is something you should look into first. Please keep in mind, I am saying this based only on what I've read - not from experience (I have a BEL A6).

I think that most people wouldn't consider that a stage 1 tune though, as it is still a stock tune.

"4Z7" doesn't define engine code but platform. 2001-2002 allroads with APB engine have "4z7" ECU as well as BELs. What's important is the letter after part number. Physically the APB ecu is labeled ME 7.1 while BEL is ME 7.1.1... They're probably the same stuff hardware wise inside though.

APB is APB, there were two revisions of the engine but all internals and all that matters is the same so both engine can work at 250hp and reach much more than that by simple chipping without any hardware changes.
