Title: JFONZ baby stage 3 HELP?
Post by: S4dizzle219 on April 26, 2013, 08:08:27 PM
So I have this tune on my 00' tip s4 the car is relatively quick but it just doesn't feel right. 1 thing I noticed is I am getting terrible gas mileage like 200 to a tank. I know e85 is bad but a stage 2 is getting avg of 25mpg. The power is there though, the other thing is I have 2 Camshaft position codes both banks. I didn't have these codes before the tune. Now in my readings I ran into. Guy who swapped to a hitachi MAF in the same situation and it fixed it. I am just looking for some help I have asked around on the AZ, facebook, & s4 forums thy all pointed me this direction. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Swapping mafs has nothing to do with cam codes do you have any logs you could post have you spoken to jfonz ?

I have, he says he did nothing that would have triggered these codes. Now he did reach out to me via message on AZ to call him so he could help me but i haven't heard from him in about a month for help. You tell me what blocks you want logged and ill try to get them up. I'm still somewhat new to the vag logging but I pretty much got it figured out.

Yeah that's a given but how can I diagnose the problem? I have a vcds logging cable and laptop dedicated. What should I be looking for.

Im in spain.

Check the sparks yourself. If they look good its time to change coils specialy if you have tons of miles on it

For say 60000 is the value for become failing..

It stock tune coil survive much more... but under high boost things get worst at 3000 shake alot and passing 4000 fails is gone...

Cheers

all coil packs ohm'd out & look good from what i can tell. spark plug gaps .026 josh actually specified .028 but i was getting really bad misfires & e the smaller it went away.

So you can tell that by reading this? What points show you the timing is wrong. We used cam lock bar & everything.

Well then you did something wrong because both cams are way out.
Your belt is on wrong, thats why you have the codes, it is also clearly visible in the log.

As others have said, you're a tooth off, although using a lock bar only goes so far in any case.  You can see it in the 16.0,16.0 -- you are 16* advanced, although your mechanic is to be commended that he got both cams exactly the same amount of wrong.  You can fix this easily enough, though.  Pop the pulleys off the cams and rotate the cams relative to the pulleys.  If you don't have a compact pulley puller, modify a generic auto parts-store puller - they typically have a couple of options for reach and can be used as two-or three-jaw.  Use it as a two-jaw and cut off the arms so you can fit it between the pulley and the radiator support.  You may need to cut off the excess threads also.  (The cam and pulley are normally locked together via a tapered fit.)

You're going to want to retard the cams (cams counter-clockwise), in your case about 1/8" would be a good first move.  It may take a couple of moves to get it exactly correct.

Search Audizine or one of the others for more details, pretty sure Julex or one of the other regulars on here wrote something up.

This.

Also not so sure on the J-FONZZZZ tuning. I had a close friend end up with the tops of pistons that looked like they were blasted with a shotgun after a few tuning sessions with his tunes. What's up with all these new tooners these days anyway..J-FONZZZ   GONZZO  Tuners be popping up everywhere since Nef came to be for sure.  :)

Put a stock file back on the ecu and run it on 93 to sort out any issues. Then proceed with the tuned file. If stock isn't possible, as close to stock as possible.

I would start with changing your oil. Too much fuel down the rabbit hole might have fuct your piston rings. Have you run a compression test?

**edit**
Put a stock file back on the ecu and run it on 93 to sort out any issues. Then proceed with the tuned file. If stock isn't possible, as close to stock as possible.

This is also a very good idea, don't keep running it if it's not running good - more damage could be had.

so i have an e85 J-FONZ tune & i am having fuel end up in my catch can with really crappy gas mileage. I know with e85 mpg will be lower but this is probably excessive. So i have a few measure blocks J-Fonz told me to look at about a month go & now i can't get a hold of him. Take a look @ these logs see if you can tell me anything. These are at WOT 3rd gear pulls from around 4k RPM.
All help/insight would be greatly appreciated.

here are the actual logs

cam timing is on point we actually just had to adjust this i had codes for it but my timing was +16* we fixed it but i am still getting this problem.
here are the codes my car pulls if it helps. the major thing i notice is the lambda control? my o2's & the n249 should be coded out i paid for it!

Title: Re: JFONZ baby stage 3 HELP?

The o2 code is for your primary drivers side, which can't be coded out. The N249 codeout was not properly done. Are your fuel trims working? Post a screenshot of block 32 after at least 30 minutes of driving WITHOUT clearing any codes.

well i don't have it plugged in (n249) but i thought that coding it out will bypass that issue.
and are you saying drive for 30 min straight then post? or is that a general statement just saying 30 min w/out clearing codes. i have not cleared these codes since the cam timing fix.

Title: Re: JFONZ baby stage 3 HELP?
Post by: ddillenger on July 29, 2013, 06:01:09 PM
First, plug your N249 in to prevent the possibility of it killing your trims. As far as it being coded out, it wasn't done properly to allow removal. If you want to truly code it out, I'm happy to give you the address you need to change to remove the DTC to run with it removed, but you'll need to bootmode the file off first.

As for the trims (once you have no mechanical issues such as missing n249/bad 02), clear your codes. Then drive for 30 minutes, stop and go, with varying degrees of throttle input. After which, check block 32 and post a screenshot.

Doesn't open circuit mean its unplugged? Anyways I am still trying to figure this out. Of course I now have a boost leak I think so I will be smoke testing that on Saturday

Title: Re: JFONZ baby stage 3 HELP?

Yes, open circuit means it's unplugged. Properly code outs don't require keeping it connected. Until you get that fixed your fuel trims won't work either.

Title: Re: JFONZ baby stage 3 HELP?
Post by: S4dizzle219 on August 17, 2013, 10:38:18 PM
So I'm understanding a little more on this, my primary o2 is the main adjuster for fuel. So my heater code for this means its dead hence the bad gas mileage, a lot'a'bit of reading does wonders. So I ordered the sensor today

So I did get these issues ironed out and of course now I have turbos going :'( but on a high note I am getting f21's. My question though is will I be ok on the tune I have running these turbos before going balls out stage 3?

Title: Re: JFONZ baby stage 3 HELP?
Post by: ddillenger on October 04, 2013, 05:03:17 PM
Absolutely not.

Title: Re: JFONZ baby stage 3 HELP?
Post by: S4dizzle219 on October 05, 2013, 02:51:19 PM
Absolutely not.

Why would it not be ok, Doug from frankenturbo said so this is a direct stock replacement. Said I would be ok I thought that was funny but if my tune tells my car (a) amount of fuel(b) amount of spark (c) amount of boost all the variables are the same until I change one right the turbos won't be pushing more boost until I tell them too right. So what would make this not work right?

Title: Re: JFONZ baby stage 3 HELP?
Post by: ddillenger on October 05, 2013, 04:16:51 PM
Are you really asking why you can't slap a larger turbo on and not retune?

Title: Re: JFONZ baby stage 3 HELP?
Post by: tegman88 on October 05, 2013, 04:54:38 PM
I hate to sound like an idiot, but I don't see why you couldn't slap larger turbos on and just run them with a stock file.

Regardless of what the turbos are capable of the car should limit the boost to whatever the ecu tells it to.
Just a very basic hypothetical, but if you're tuned to boost at 10psi the N75 will activate your wastegates so that you only see 10psi. If you put a larger turbo on you'll have more lag but 10psi is still 10psi, right?

I hate to sound like an idiot, but I don't see why you couldn't slap larger turbos on and just run them with a stock file.

Regardless of what the turbos are capable of the car should limit the boost to whatever the ecu tells it to.

That is kinda what I was thinking, I know its a did car but my eclipse I put a 16gturbo on my car that had a built motor and waited to tune till I could afford DSM LINK. The car ran the same until I started tweaking with it.

Because it'll overboost like a MOTHER. On E85 and stock rods, shit. You'll be luck to not have parts on the pavement in a week.

The larger turbos require less duty cycle to make the same boost. Couple that with your tuners propensity to disable safeguards, and the car won't care it's overboosting.

Good luck with it, but it's a terrible idea.

Ah, I hadn't considered that. For some reason I assumed the ecm would just adjust wastegate duty cycle however much was necessary to maintain specified boost.

soooo. i threw on the turbos. I'm still running my e85 tune car is running great. i am currently waiting on a few parts and my stg3 tune i will be switching to in a few days. I would like to say thanks for the help here. I have been logging just regular drives and a few easy pulls nothing crazy. Everything seems kosher if i rip into higher R's it will pull a bit lean but i for the most part drive like a grandma (until i switch over !!! hehehe)
