Title: Question on Change S4 to RS4 cluster
Post by: gregsback on March 28, 2013, 04:05:44 AM
Hi,
I would like to change the cluster of a S4 to a RS4 Cluster. Is it possible to simply change the eeprom of the cluster in order not to re-learn the keys? Is the eeprom identical regarding it's content between S4 and RS4?
many thanks in advance
br
greg

If it is a NA ECU, you don't have to worry about the immo - except the immo light, which you can mask out by putting electrical tape on the back of the overlay.

You will have to change the country code to get mph and mpg (and optionally the overlay as described in the thread)

You also MAY get a missing message DTC P1650

I have a spare RS4 cluster that i've been meaning to put in my B5 but i have yet to do try it.

Please let us know if you get yours working, i will also post my results if I ever get around to it.

Nye - Sell me your RS4 cluster.

No, sell it to me please :) (There is one on ebay.de for 400 EUR btw (http://bit.ly/Xf9Xv4)

I'm having some issues coding it to mph/mpg

Looks like the RS4 cluster I have has a different date/time display that does not have AM/PM or MM/DD/YYYY support

so the US coding (00264) does't work, the display is garbled (month is garbled, pm time does not display correctly).

I am going to try to transplant a US date/time display and see if that works.

Why not copy the eeprom contents from your s4 cluster?

Heh, don't have the car handy, its in the shop.

I guess I'll snag one of the bins floating around nef.

BTW I can't get vag-commander 3.6 working with my ross-tech cable, only 2.5..

anybody else have problems with 3.6?

Interesting. 00464 works (miles/mpg) but vcds says 4 is GB... right hand drive...

hopefully the left/right driver door inputs aren't switched (like trichards complained about).

I dont have my car handy so i can't test it.

still trying to get a NA S4 dump from a buddy, ill try that next.

Flash the a4 dump I posted, and recode the cluster for a 6 cylinder. I can't imagine there are many, if any, differences.

Nope. Doesn't like 00264.. same issue... doesn't like PM times, and date is messed up with month first.

You might want to ask berTTos because he is running an RS4 cluster.

depends also on ECU type, which software number is the ecu?

He pretty much said i'm boned; i have to use the 00464 coding.

I received my used RS4 cluster yesterday and installed it in 5 minutes, and then used VAG Commander to copy my immo bin to the RS4 cluster from my old one so the immo light is not flashing anymore (it's a Euro car so it has immo) and the mileage is also synced. Thanks to ddillenger for the tip on re-flashing the cluster.

Okay I was wrong, after flashing the eeprom from the S4 cluster I noticed that the oil temperature
gauge stopped working. I flashed the original one back and voila it works. Do you guys have any idea? :)

No clue on the oil temp issue... but i have run in to another issue.. the miles to empty reading is very wrong (about 30% high)...

Is the RS4 fuel tank bigger or something?

Well the cluster code is different, so even the speed/rpm readings were a bit off with the S4 cluster dump written to the RS4 cluster, so I reverted back to the RS4 one and killed the immo led.

The fuel tanks are the same, both being 62 litres.

Seems as though the issue is that the RS4 cluster somehow ignores FKVA... which is problematic because the max KVB isn't big enough for my injectors. Now experimenting with KVNPZ...

That might be the issue then. I am only running 550cc EV14s and my consumption display usually shows
the correct values.

That calculation is done in the ECU software and the result is sent to the cluster on the CANbus.

Coding issue or max limit in the cluster maybe?

That was my understanding as well. I'll know pretty soon, got an almost empty tank of gas now.

I had that issue (ignoring FKVA) but never got to the bottom of it.... I'm curious to see if you get that resolved though :)

I'm rapidly cooling off on this rs4 cluster thing.

Title: Re: Question on Change S4 to RS4 cluster

I have verified that neither KVB nor KVNPZ have any effect on the RS4 cluster. No idea why.

However, maxing KVB and the cluster adaptation to 115% gets me close enough ... so I guess thats that for now.

So anybody wanting to use >900cc injectors with M-box and RS4 cluster will want to consider moving to K-box (which I assume works correctly, although i have not tried it yet)
