Title: Totally tech savvy, totally wrench savvy, totally scared lol... So how do I??
Post by: AboveNBeyond on May 24, 2014, 11:57:13 PM
Ok so I think I am happy I came across this site, I am actively seeking and searching to mod my ECU...

First here is what I have:
2000 Audi A4 (B5) 1.8T (ATW) 5spd Quattro
Turbo upgraded to K04, FMIC, Carbino w/ K&N Cone filter, Boost guage, etc.
My ECU # is 4B0906018P
I already have a Vagcom type cable (from Alpha-Bid and their software working)

My question is this:

Is there anything on this site for my ecu matching well with my mods.
Is there a safe way to flash my ECU?

(I have searched some with no solid info found, will continue but thank you for any help you post)

This looks promising... can anyone tell me anything about this file?

It's a KP file, you'll need WinOLS to open it.

If you've got the cable, read your file using the NefMoto software to get a BIN file.

Use WinOLS to open the BIN file, then attach the KP file to the BIN.  The KP is basically a contents page for your file.

By the description, its not very full, so you're only going to see a few maps, which is good for stage 1, but you can't really progress, you'll need to add more maps to go further.

Read the Wiki, it's all documented in there.

Do not flash files you didn't write yourself, unless you understand EVERY SINGLE CHANGE made to that file with respect to stock.

There is no free lunch.

Not lookin for a free lunch  ::) but if someone had a file that I could flash to my ecu that was already modified to give me something like a stage 1 or 2, I'd be a happy camper.

(Pardon me if me verbiage is not 100% accurate)

Jesus man... can you guys be any RUDER sh!t... I thought the info here was more open source, not MADE of gold. And you guys b!tchin about "free lunch" if you have NOTHING to offer, NOR anything to sell... then stfu you're useless and bitching for no reason.

I did receive a hopeful PM, I will go read more, try to see if I can learn, or rather wanna learn, vs pay.

Thank you all who posted positive info, everyone else... CHILL OUT!

There are several definition files for your car posted. In fact, last week I exported a map list. Start by reading the S4tuning wiki (it is very relevant to your car, all the maps are the same, just the addresses differ), and locating the maps it talks about. Make sense of what you're looking at, and go from there.

http://s4wiki.com/wiki/Tuning

We try to discourage people from paying for files on this site, it hinders the DIY aspect. If after reading you have more questions, start a tune thread. There are no less than 10 active threads for the 1.8t right now.

Let me know if you find something more comprehensive (or cheaper lol) than the s4wiki tuning page.

I busted my ass making stuff public; spent 10 years gathering (unencumbered) information into one place.

You're tilting at windmills.

That's great! Maybe I am maybe you are... misunderstanding... You're offering me nothing yet telling me I am looking for a free lunch. Look I am off to go read more about wtfe is on this forum about MY car, MY ECU, I will spend time wondering aimlessly in hopes that through reading ALL the how toos, probably reading much I do not need as it will not pertain to my car NOR ecu... after hours of doin so I will likely come to find ALL the info I need, the app to use, the cable to use, bang my way through it for hours and days...

Or I can ask and maybe someone who is polite (as I would be if someone happened upon any other forum I frequent such as custom firmwares on phones, etc) and maybe someone could say right off the bat...

Oh hey that ECU HAS TO HAVE A CHIP INSTALLED (Like GIAC does) or...
Hey, so in so knows all about those Audi ECU's or...
Hey I have a sweet file I can give you for $xxx.xx I spent hours creating it, it does XYZ...

or there's those other kind of pricks, you know the kind who gripe about "free lunch" but have nothing of value to post, or choose not to, yet still wanna b!tch.

Frusterating is all... I can work for Apple developing and testing the original iPhone, I can work for Honda motor Corp developing 3-D thermal stereo controls, I can work for Microsoft on the "kinect"... I can figure this out! But I can also buy a good file that someone created and willing to sell... meaning, I CAN BUY MY OWN LUNCH!

You have no idea how many times we have seen these same questions asked. You have to understand that a solid 70 percent of new members come here just looking for a file. Trying to keep order is very stressful. Don't take it personally.

OP: Have you retrieved the current binary that's running on your car right now? That would be a good place to start ;)

There's a steep learning curve involved with the DIY route and if there are no tuned files specifically written for your cars hardware in the public domain, the only solutions are to learn yourself and write your own tune, or pay for a file.

There's no such thing as a free lunch; you're either going to spend time or money ;)

I guess that's probably true... Me though, I guess my OP fits in that class but I'd like to actually learn how to write my own, I'm certain I have the skills. Turnin wrenches for 26 years, racing almost the same, pushing keys on keyboards for 14 professionally, certified in Linux, c++ experience, etc. I dunno what it takes to write them yet but when I do, I think I'll enjoy it.

You have to understand that a solid 70 percent of new members come here just looking for a file. Trying to keep order is very stressful. Don't take it personally.

My apologies

Listen up everyone... I'M NOT ASKING FOR ANYBODYS LUNCH! in effort to save time and cause my car NEEDS a file now, already... I'd be glad to buy one. BUT IM STILL GOING TO LEARN HOW. Damn!

There is no such thing as saving time here unless you are a speed reader. Your car doesn't NEED a file now, as your car will get you around just fine on a stock file. You want one for free and if you can't get one you'll pay for it, plain and simple. It's only a big deal to you because you've been called out on it and you're blowed about not getting the "help" you desire. ..and it's a big deal to some of us to weed out the lazy people. This is a DIY not a DIFY site. (although there are people on here that will gladly take your money for their efforts)

So calm down, take a breath or two and prepare yourself to read mad pages of info YOU THINK you don't need to know because of your inexperience. If you have questions use the search box before you ask because the answers are most likely here already.

If you stick with it the "puzzle pieces" fall together nicely and the reward is pretty darn amazing.

I'm confused, in your first post in this thread you ask for a file and now you're picking a fight with everyone on here.

As has already been mentioned ask specific questions about how you can tune your ecu for your car.

First he should read... Then try... Asking questions should be backed not only by proper logs but also by some knowledge and experience IMHO.

From the way this sentence reads you certainly are looking for "free lunch", just sayin..

So while you're "just sayin" let me TELL you... in my OP I asked
"Is there anything on this site for my ecu matching well with my mods.
Is there a safe way to flash my ECU?"

I ASKED THIS BECAUSE GIAC REQUIRES A CHIP TO BE SOLDERED IN!
I asked if there was anything that pertained to my ECU on this site because I WAS NOT SURE if my ECU required a chip to be added NO MATTER WHAT!!

My secondary comment " if someone had a file that I could flash to my ecu that was already modified to give me something like a stage 1 or 2, I'd be a happy camper."

I AM ASKING "IF", meaning if someone had something that was already modded, and said "give me something like a stage 1 or 2" because "IF" someone did, that meant it's possible, NOT THAT I WAS GOING TO JUST USE THEIR FILE AS IS! This would confirm to me a CHIP was NOT required, I could review a file, compare to my stock, LEARN from it... MOD it as needed for MY ECU/CAR... then FLASH it to mine "IF" possible!

Apparently you missed my apology in that post about my verbiage might not be correct!

But hey, way to welcome a new guy to the forum! Dumb a$$!

I think you misunderstood me from the get go, or my lack of proper verbiage to keep you from flexing your muscles may have been the case... but I am simply defending myself against all you guys who don't know sh!t about me, what I am willing to do... would or will I pay for a file, sure. Would I accept a free one sure... I DONT EXPECT a free one... and besides, why not ask, why not see if someone who has experience says hey "dont start with square wheels, round ones work better"

You guys a bustin my balls and if you look again at my OP you'll see I am simply asking "IF"... then my 2nd post I ask about a file I found because again, GIAC requires a chip to be soldered in. I asked about that file because I was trying to find out if FLASHING ANYTHING to my ECU was possible!

Following the wiki and the software in this forum, thanks.
TunerPro will work for you, if you can either find, or build an XDF file that's compatible with the file you pulled off your car. It's just a descriptor file that tells TunerPro what location in the binary the specific maps are located at. Have you looked at a well defined binary / XDF combination from here yet? The XDF files have to be made by hand and are specific to each binary, but with some pattern matching skills, you can use an existing well defined binary / XDF combination and adapt this for the file you pull from your car.

You can also get the WinOLS demo from EVC that is very good indeed for this style of reverse engineering. I'd recommend looking into both, for a start.

Listen, don't take any of this too personally.  The folks who put this forum together have a tremendous amount of time, intelligence, and probably a few tears invested into making this what it is.  I'm not going to accuse you of looking for hand-outs, but nothing is more irritating than the perceived notion of someone taking advantage of all your hard work.  And, as has been pointed out, the culture of this forum is definitely geared toward the DIY as opposed to purchasing or being given tuned files.

Here's a great way to get started:

1.)  READ AS MUCH AS YOU CAN!  Seriously, read everything you can find that seems remotely related to your project.  As pointed out, the S4wiki is fantastic.

2.)  Use Tony's latest tool to pull the BIN off your 018P ECU.  Make sure you use the latest version of the software and choose the 400BB layout.  It will think that's the incorrect memory layout, but it isn't.  If you use one of the 800 layouts, you will simply end up with a 1 meg file which contains your original 512 BIN as well as a duplicate directly following it.

3.)  Download a copy of the WinOLS test version (it's free).  Using this and the map pack I posted you will be able to view your BIN in an intelligent manner and get a better understanding of everything contained therein.  The biggest take away from this step will most certainly be realizing just how little you know about your ECU's contents.

Once you've completed these, then you can start asking intelligent questions about what you may wish to modify to better accommodate the modifications you have installed.  And, I can guarantee intelligent questions will undoubtedly receive more favorable responses.

Cheers and good luck.

Now that you have basically told half the useful members to suck your dick or effectively told them to fuck off I would wager a guess that you are kinda done here with getting free lunches. Regardless of how good you can blow-hard about yourself you clearly arent smart enough to know how to help yourself out with the first steps in order to obtain something you want in life.

Where is your stock file?

Pro tip - create a new account, post stock file, make less statements about chips, racing and yourself.  Make more statements about your car, factual ones.

Before attempting to insult my intelligence, why don't YOU read... I know its hard n challenging... 26 letters, all scrambled up in your mind. Cause if you HAD 2 connected brain cells and DID read, you'd KNOW why I asked specifically what I did and why!t

Where is your stock file?
On my laptop ;-)

I'm sorry you're a pro at creating new accounts!

My "statements" about chips where foundation for my thoughts n questions.

"Racing & myself" well I was kinda forced to when people like you who don't know me yet start judging me, accusing me, and labeling me!

"Factual ones" Are you suggesting any of my statements about my car ARE NOT FACTUAL? In essence now insulting me by calling me a liar?

Good one you just like everyone else SHOULD be apologizing, but in reality we're all adults and I'm not expecting that... But I was NOT EVER looking for a free lunch, desert, etc...

So tell me this, cause I'm curious... WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT YOU! I mean who are you, or who do you think you are, that several DAYS later, and after the thread was locked, then unlicked, mod says "enough hazing" so on and so forth... WHO ARE YOU TO DISREGARD WHAT HE SAID, WHAT I'VE EXPLAINED, and yet still for no good reason you wanna jump on and chime in. Hope that made your day ;-)

Abrasive! Oh ok... sorry, I didn't know as the new guy I have to sit here bent over, spread the cheeks and let you all have your way!

As the "new" guy I could have been told to go do something... AND I WOULD HAVE AND DID! But all the accusations... the bend over and take it... nope, not me! I tried nicely to explain, was attacked more, tried again, new guys attacked me, and it still hasn't stopped!

And resumes, dude... I don't care if someone here has a better one. Congrats to them. I speant my first 15 years in the automotive industry, and 15 since in the Technology field... (most of my years of expierence being in the Unix/Linux field) I am attacked and therefor tried to simply point out I have knowledge, and please stop!

I think I have explained myself plenty enough and honestly feel like attacks since doing so just shows character on the attackers behalf, not mine. But wtfe!

No on doubts you can get it, we are doubting the effort you will make because thus far you have failed to do much research.  You have also failed to follow normal social standards that people follow on this forum.

Look, I was completely misunderstood in the beginning and being attacked for no good reason since. Social standards, read my posts again, all of them, I might not have been as clear as I could have but damit I tried and I have tried to explain... but screw me for trying, I am still getting attacked... and I AM NOT FOLLOWING SOCIAL STANDARDS :-(

Gimme a min, I am at work, laptop is in my trunk in the parking lot... I'll post it up asap.

No one has attacked you.  Also your insecurity is showing, stop focusing on all the wrong things here.

Be honest, you wanna look at it or you don't believe I could get it?

This forum and it's members are here to help people gain skills in tuning cars. Quite frankly, without the binary from your car, your chances of learning how to tune it are Zero, regardless of our motivation for asking. Posting the file at least shows some work and progress on your part, but if you can't get the file, then ask for help. Politely.

As Mr Snow Trooper has said, nobody has attacked you and our continued involvement in this exchange surely must demonstrate at least some good will (and thick skin....).

May I suggest you think carefully, young padawan, before you write your next reply....

its just the internet... some people need to chill out. its not like somebody plowed your wife. you come here asking for help... then blow your lid when somebody tells you to start reading up how to do it.

the guys you are looking for help from on this site are using the internet for its original purpose, the exchange of ideas and information. not to be offensive dicks and web bullies.

to answer your original question, how do you? you just start going through the mass amounts of information on this forum and comb through it for what you need, i guarantee you its there if they say it is, you just need to find it.  i was in the same spot as you a couple months ago, but instead of just begging to be spoon fed, i just spent my extra time on here instead of watching tv. and i made a few successful flashs and tweaks to some files the other day and i am extremely happy with the results. all the tools are out there for logging and tuning and flashing, and guess what, they are all free!!! the only thing i paid for was the ft232 cable for flashing. and that was under $20.

I have now gotten myself a safe 91octane Stage 3 tune for my build next week (thanks tony!), and i dont have to shell out $400+ for a tune. and the best part is, when i have a problem i dont have to pay an excessive amount to have a company retune it, i just hook up my laptop and make some tweaks and log it and go from there until i am happy. and all i needed was to have an open mind and be willing to learn and read.

your choice, open your mind and stat reading or please leave and take your money elsewhere, it sounds like you have more money to blow then a willingness to learn.

Pro tip - create a new account, post stock file, make less statements about chips, racing and yourself.  Make more statements about your car, factual ones.

One of my favorite things about being on this forum, which seems to be at its core comprised of folks with at least slightly more intellectual prowess than your average car forum neanderthal, are the little gems like this.
