Long story short.
-CAR--2004 AUDI A4 1.8T "AMB" APR ST1 tune
-TOOL--VAGDASHCAN 5.17

I want to read my SKC. I know the RB4 cluster is encrypted and was told not to read the cluster to get the SKC.
So I should read it off the ECU.
However I have also heard reading a tuned ECU like APR can cause it to brick?

Not sure if any of this is true or not. But I don't want either to happen.
Can anyone give me some advice and which approach I should take.

Thanks..

I retrieved my 4 digit SKC using VagTacho. You can't get the 6 digit SKC any longer since VW went to using GEKO. Afaik with using VagTacho, the 4 digit SKC comes from the instrument cluster and doesn't access the ECU. I don't know anything about APR except they move, change and encrypt like everything almost in the ECU.

if you use Argdub's eeprom tool to read the Eeprom with a vagcom cable you can get the SKC off there, it's done it boot mode anyway so wont be affected by the APR chip/coding.

Either that or as said give vagtacho ago, as that read the SKC directly off the instrument cluster. Remember that it will be a 4 digit code and in vagcom you need to add a 0 to the front of it if recoding the ecu.

Thanks for the info guys.
I may have to use the eeprom tool.
The VAGTACHO does not work with RB4 clusters. They are encrypted. This is why I got the VagDashCAn. But it is very hit and miss when pulling it off the cluster.
I could end up with the dreaded DEF ERROR and have no cluster.

I am continuing my research before I connect to the cluster.
I did connect my VagTacho and I and super lucky it didnt kill it.

forgot about adding the zero...its been awhile since I did this (years). I also had to flip the first 2 numbers also if I remember correctly. I think there is info on the Ross-Tech site about it. It shouldn't be that hard to find using their search box.
