I'm pretty clued up on ME7, but never worked with ME9.
Can anyone explain the fundamental differences?

i have been starting to dig into it, i have yet to get a tune flashed in though. I will gladly share what i find once i get to that point. I hope to start flashing soon once i get a BDM read.

Fairly similar in concept...some nitty gritty details are different though. As far as the torque model goes, it must be expanded for different modes of operation which the 2.0T is capable of. This includes charge flap movement combined with camshaft adjustment + multiple injection modes (Lean charge, split charge, anti-knock, etc, etc). Also, injections are no longer made over a constant pressure differential (like a boost referenced FPR in ME7). This introduces some complexities with pump pressure demand and calculating your fueling overhead because it is RPM dependent due to the fixed displacement HPFP. Just start reading and reading...thats honestly a million times better than someone laying out a half-assed tuning guide without people actually understanding the concepts behind it.

you need a bdm read from your own car or would any bdm read do the trick ?

For anyone going beyond changing maps and starting to look into the code itself, the main difference is that MED9 is based on the MPC5xx CPU while ME7 was on the good old C167. That are two different worlds for those wanting to disassemble code.

you need a bdm read from your own car or would any bdm read do the trick ? Well i got a MPPS read, that is in the original file section, i want a bdm read as it gets EVERYTHING that is writable...supposedly. Then if i mess anything up along the way, i can recover totally.

Only the flash (2meg) is writable over OBD on these ECU's
BDM wont yeild anything useful to you.

I was actually thinking ME9, rather than MED9.
MED9 would come next, but I want to learn about ME9 port injection as used in for example the Ford/Volve I5 engines.

I'm about to dive into med9 as well... I know i can get an mpps read but I don't want to flash until i get a bdm read for reasons stated above... I'm not sure you can get an mpps read on a b8 s4 though, at least with the clone that I have... i have both b8 a4 and s4 access, so any info regarding an obd read for a b8 s4 would be helpful.

The ECU is Simos84. I think the only company that offers a tune for it is APR. I could tell a lot about it but I'm not allowed to

I could tell a lot about it but I'm not allowed to IOW the state of the art will be delayed for another 10 years, just like ME7. Ridiculous. Guess what. This time i'm not spending 5 years of my life decoding it w/o tuner help like i did for ME7
