Title: 2004 A8L 4.2 reading issues...
Post by: robin on February 16, 2011, 02:54:00 PM
Hey Tony--

Wanted to read a stock .bin from my friend's 2004 A8L so I can start building a file... but it wouldn't read with your application. Even though it's a 2004, VCDS connects with CAN and I used another read tool in CAN mode to get a .bin.

I've attached a log file. Is this something your tool can support? Or am I asking too much? :)

Thanks for the great application.

I'm not sure of what the different requirements of the CAN based flash programming are. But it seems to connect with slow init, so if it connects, I guess it is worth a try. It also passes the security negotiation which is good. But it seems to get hung up with starting the diagnostic session. I have seen this before with a 2004 VW R32.

Which tool did you end up using to read the ECU?

I think in 2004 something changed with the message format for starting the diagnostic session, but I haven't figured it out yet.

If you want to do some more testing, or if we could get a log of what the other tools are doing, it should be fairly easy to fix.

I can't sniff the other cable, not my place to see how they do it. Let me know if you'd like me to test anything with your tool however.

Can you at least tell me what tool you used?

A friend's RevoRead application and their USB dongle.

One question then, does it read using programming mode, or does it use development mode?

If it uses programming mode, then the NefMoto software needs to support newer ways of starting the programming session.

If it uses development mode, then it is using a non-standard method to read the flash memory by unlocking the restrictions on certain memory ranges.

That I'm not sure on... It was timing out quickly trying to read through the K-line, chose the CAN option and it read out in about 40 minutes.
