Hey, just quick question I didn't look anywhere else 1st, so don't beat me up.

Local gas stations don't have e85, but now they are carrying 90oct non-ethonal.

My friend has a stock 04 A4 1.8T and ran his tank empty and decided to try some. Said the car ran like crap. Didn't boost right didn't pull, it was horrible. He was glad to have only spent $20 on gas that was $4.78 a gallon.

Now my dad, loves it for it 89 Yamaha 700cc bike cause non-ethonal is all the engine builder said to use after his dual carbs needed a rebuild to keep his bikes carbs clean and was only really only able to use the fuel cause they had it 35 miles from me down by his job but wasn't worth a solo trip for some.

I'm in Tampa Bay Florida area.

1.) Why did my friends car run like crap on it he always runs 93 no questions asked, but wanted to try it without researching?

2.) Any reason to use it or care about it for my 2.7T?

Lets put it this way:

Forget about ethanol for a moment.

What do you think all low octane fuel does in a high compression, forced induction motor?

What octane rating do you think E85 has (hint: it isn't 85)?

I understand the lower octane. Understand the results. But was it the lower octane or the non-ethonal?

Here is a much less sarcastic answer:

His car ran like crap because it creates enough cylinder pressure to need the fuel stability of 91 or better octane. And with no ethanol to help it would be even worse. Pass for your 2.7t too, just leads to detonation even easier. He probably got bad enough ignition correction to pull load and drown the engine at the same time.

The non-ethanol stations are there for things like you mentioned. Old carbureted engines that are not tuned for nor have the proper materials in their fuel systems to use ethanol fuels. Keeps the ethanol from eating carb gaskets and diaphragms. Its not to keep that carbs clean, but to keep them from being dried out and leaking.

Ethanol is used as an octane booster.

Depending on the blend from what I understand e85 is usually around 105 octane.

I'm so glad the pump gas in the UK starts at 95RON ,I can get 99RON At my local supermarket :-)

95RON corresponds to US 89AKI

95 is crap, stay away from it if you gonna tune your car.
