Title: Tuning for cams? What do they do on a na engine?
Post by: Mechsoldier on March 23, 2016, 05:51:32 PM
There are some places advertising chips or tunes for vr6 na motors with specific camshafts. A customer was asking about it, but what would they even change for that on a 12v with a factory wide band? Wouldn't it just allow for more fuel and maybe they mess with timing advance?

Or, is there some map that needs to be altered other than that? I could understand if they were altering cam timing or something on a variable timing car, but I searched the site here and found nothing.

You're asking a much more general question than you think...

It has nothing to do with a VR6, 12V or whatever; if you know how cam timing affects hp, torque, knock resistance, VE, etc. then you'd already know the answer :P

Well no i think you basically answered me. It went down like this at the shop I'm working at as a contractor, "hey this guy wants cams and such and such tuning company had a tune they said makes a big difference with these cams.

And my response was, " Yeah well they sell cams and shit so thst doesn't surprise me, however, they don't have access to anything in the tune I don't have access to, it's just a matter of me being able to push fueling and ignition timing more, so there's nothing in thst tune that we can't do with the Kess v2 setup and ecm titanium and pro tuner and stuff.

And him pushing further so I said look I'll ask on nefmoto, but the end result is the car doesn't have variable cam timing so in reality there's nothing magical about their tune.

The reason I mentioned the engine was just to be clear it doesn't haveven any variable timing ability or anything. I realize other than that it's an engine, but more or less I think you confirmed it for me.

Sort of, because even if you don't have vvt, the basics of cam timing apply if you are choosing custom aftermarket cams...

Right, but what the tuning company sort of implied is their tune was changing some parameters that they had stumbled upon or built into the file or something. And all I was trying to tell the guys I was talking to, is that all they did was optimize fuel, spark, and how much load the ecm was calling for, just like anybody else does.

Yep. You're absolutely right.
