 I bought a spare ECU to play with and need to change the immo to work with my car. (4z7907551R ME7.1.1 ECU from 03 tip AR).

I can connect to the spare via VCDS on the bench, however the immo protection won't let me read/write - no surprise there.
I have tried using pin 21 on the ECU with no luck, always has the immo protection active (I have tried 13.85V, 12.50V, 12.00V, and a 2200 Ohm resistor for around 6.8V iirc)

When trying to get the ECU into bootmode I short pin 24 of the flash chip as I power up the ECU then remove the short... I've tried many times and have not been able to get into bootmode. Sometimes it will boot up normally  (where VCDS can connect) and sometimes VCDS wont be able to communicate but Nefmoto can't connect in bootmode either.

How are people getting these ECUs into bootmode? I've read a few other threads where people had similar issue but none of the solutions in those threads have worked for me.


Edit: My goal here is to use ArgDub's eeprom programmer tool to either copy my good ecu's eeprom contents to the new one or to get the SKC from the dump.

I had to remove the resistor from the EEPROM power pin on my bench harness setup to get my 551r to connect in boot mode.

Are you referring to the bootmode pin? I tried with a 5k resistor and with no resistor several times each on the boot pin.

No sorry, I guess I am not describing it well. EEPROM v. EPROM.
I am talking about the bench harness schematic. It says to use a resistor on one of the power pins. I hd to ditch that resistor. Also, I found a straight jump to ground for the boot pin to be more reliable than the resistor to boot pin.

Please show us a picture of the ECU you are using and which pin you are connecting to ground. That should help us verify you are using the right method.

There's a red arrow pointing to the pin I have been using. I've tried with and without a 5k resistor on the boot pin, and have tried shorting it to board ground and the common ground.

It looks like you are using the right pin on the flash memory chip. To enter boot mode you need to ground Port Zero Pin 4 on the processor, which is connected to Pin 24 of the AM29F800 flash memory chip.

I attached an image showing another location you can ground that should work for your ECU.

You aren't giving the ECU any power before you attempt to enter boot mode are you? The ECU should be completely disconnected from power, then connect the boot pin to ground, then apply power to the ECU, then remove the boot pin, then attempt to connect with boot mode software.

I tried shorting that pin to ground (with and without a 5k resistor) with no luck, I was still able to connect with VCDS after each attempt.

I went through and double checked all my connections - everything looked good except possibly one thing. I've just been using the on/off switch of the power supply and I noticed when it is off it is still giving 0.66V. Would that be keeping the ECU out of bootmode? I'm going to go ahead and add a switch to my power line to test it now

At this point I would say, make sure the ECU has 0 volts and is completely off before trying to initiate boot mode.

I'm guessing that may be the problem, especially since my power supply just stopped working (protection light is on) so I'm going to have to fix/replace that before I can get back to getting the ecu into bootmode. Hopefully I can get to that this weekend.

No problem. "Give a man a fish... Teach a man to fish..." and all that jazz. The more people that know how to do this stuff, the more people there are to help others, and buy premium feature licenses for NefMoto software. ;D

In my experience with a6/allroad ECUs, they are extremely finicky. Two different ECUs and both I could only boot mode properly once in 10 tries or so and while in there, I was successful in finishing transfer maybe few times in hundreds of times I tried. By properly entering boot mode I mean getting through initial log in step and actually entering programming stage. Most of times I would just go through log in step and galletto would bug out before even starting transfer. Very finicky.

All that while S4 ECU would go in and do the trick each time.

Anyway, if you fail to enter boot mode or fail programming, you need to have the ECU off the power for at least 2 minutes before next attempt. Any shorter than that and ECU will act like a bricked ECU or won't go into boot mode.

I got my power supply working again and after a solid two hours of attempt after attempt to get the spare ECU into bootmode, I did! And I now have a working spare. Thanks for the help everyone!

I'll add my $0.02 here as I was having all sorts of issues with my BEL allroad ME7.1.1  ECU. Try as I might, it just would not go into boot mode.
What I did was add a 1K resistor between the boot pin (as shown in Tony's image above) and ground, and I kept this connected during the 95040 flashing procedure.

I read my 95040, changed it to immo off and I attempted to put my ECU in bootmode the normal way(ground pin 24 on mem to no avail) and then using the pin Tony mentioned, and now my ECU will not function. Will not start, will not read from VCDS. saw a tiny spark on that pin cuz my hand shook slightly. I'm guessing my 4Z7907551R ECU is now fried.  >:( I have flashed 5 ECU's (all VW GTI/Jetta) with no problem, but this Allroad pisses me off. I also cannot read the 95040 normally either.
