Title: Need help reading ECU Golf 1.8t AUM
Post by: katoona on July 17, 2019, 01:04:12 PM
Hi. I am a newbie, and I have a 2001 Golf 1.8T AUM. It has been tuned by a local company, and the car is working great. But I have one problem - in AUM maps there is a folder/map called FVPDKLDUS which I need to make some changes to which the tuning company forgot to do.

So, I was thinking of downloading the ECU file (guess it is .ols extension), changing the values of FVPDKLDUS, and then flashing the ECU with the updated file.

I have a Ross-Tech HEX V2 cable + Nefmoto 1.9.4.3 software + WinOls demo.

What I am wondering - is this going to be as simple as downloading the ECU with Nefmoto, editing the .ols --> FVPDKLDUS with WinOls demo, then upload/flash the "updated" .ols file with Nefmoto?

Before I start I just wanted to hear with you guys if I am missing something. I am not sure if Nefmoto will download the ECU as a .ols file - and any help/advice will be much appreciated.

I am sorry if this topic has been asked and answered before - I just registered here today, and there are so many threads. Not easy for a newbie to find what he is looking for :)

I am also curious about how to read the ECU - Nefmoto is asking for Flash file and Memory layout, and since I am going to read the ECU first, I don't have any flash file, and I don't know which memory layout to use.

You can't export files in Winols demo. Ols files are Winols project files that contain the tune and map pack. Ols files are only for Winols nefmoto won't flash it

I see that Nefmoto saves the file as Bin, and I think I can edit the bin file in Winols. Mmmm, I just tested, and that seem to work. The checksum test is ok, and I guess I can flash the edited file with NefMoto??

The file has definitely changed, and the new values seem to be in place. I only wanted to change 2 values in the file, and I didnt want to make any tuning or other stuff.

You won't be able to export the bin file from the winols demo.

Also if the ECU has a riser or aftermarket software you may not be able to write it.

In addition, depending on the file, some aftermarket tuners have other hidden checksums to prevent others from odifying the bin.

Finally, some aftermarket tuners obscure the maps they change by putting in fake data and moving their real map elsewhere, usually encrypted or otherwise obscured to hide them.

In short, you really should just start from a stock bin with a stock ECU with no riser.

Is it not possible to just change the values and hit "save" - it seems to work.

The ECU is not write protected. The tune is made by a friend who owns a "turbo-shop", and not by a tuning company that wants to protect their software. As long as the bin file will be ok, it will be no problem flashing it.

But to ask another question - I want to change the value of FVPDKLDUS in AUM Map, and just change the factor offset to 0. Thats it. What is the best way of editing the file - in your opinion?

That saves it to .ols

You still have to extract the bin image to flash. You can't flash an ols file.
