Title: Do ECU numbers need to match?

I've been trying to source a specific ME7.3.1 ECU but the more I look into I'm not convinced the HW & SW numbers have to match as long as the engine type is identical? Can anyone confirm this?

as I know, only SW number 'must be' identical for working car .. ofcourse CS must be okay...
