Title: S3 BAM Stage 2 tune.. WG preload settings - boost creep?
Post by: yessmen on June 16, 2021, 01:37:33 PM
Hi
firstly thanks for this great forum! Theres a lot of info and tips for the tuning!

I am slowly building Stage 2 BAM tune for my personal car.

S3 8L BAM stock K04-023 Turbocharger.
Solid aluminium 3" Intake
Wagner FMIC
Catless downpipe, miltek catback.

Boost 1,4bar to about 1,2bar (6000rpm)
Fueling midreange 0,82 and 0,80 high rpm to redline.
Ignition timing a little tweaked not finished..

Main problem is not reaching higher boost levels 5000rpm+. So I loged wastegate (N75 unpluged). for basic view.

Is it possible to tighten even more or is this already too much? Its supose to by cracking around 0,55bar. On the log I can see it crack around 0,3bar which is low but after 4500rpm goes up until 0,7bar redline.
So it creeeps is it small wastegate port or is this normal?
Thanks

No, you are out of injector anyway

If anything you should be pulling boost.

Have you checked the compressor map for that turbo?

Yes i know about fuel, i will be installing 4 bar Fuel regulator back. (It was fine but fuel hoses leaked).

So if you look on the n75 log Is IT ok or?

No point in doing anything until both your requested boost and fueling make sense.

Fix one thing at a time. You're violating one of the most fundamental rules of tuning. You're just going to have to retune the boost PID anyway *again* when you change injectors.

4 bar FPR IN.
Lowered boost a little bit.
Preload set to about 4 turns after wastegate closed by finger.

You're not going to gain anything by winding up the preload apart from shit boost control. Fit a bigger turbo. Rods bend after 1.6 bar though on this car, so change the conrods at the same time... maybe fit a DSG at the same time so you don't go crazy shifting on it...
If you don't want to do that then keep it as it is, this turbo is very good.

Your boost control is basically open loop, it's not controlling pretty much anything and it's not right either, but hey there's people who tune with kfldrapp so this is not much different.

You can leave it like it is though.

Engine Is built, conrods, pistons, head.
Its prepared for type 064 hybrid i just did not decided what to buy.
So i want maximum from standard 023 turbo.

Ok then boost curve Is bad what do you sugest for good power and no flat weak spots throw rpms?
As i readed 1,4 to 1,1bar is ok?

Thank you!

I didn't write anywhere that boost curve is bad, I wrote that:
1. There is no point to put a ton of preload on the gate, the turbo is done and you won't make any more power.
2. Your boost control is not doing anything, it's running open loop.

Boost control open loop can you be more specific about that?
Did not see anything anywhere.
I can see that wgdc Is 94% on spool and then it some kind trying to keep up with request.

95% is max. If you do not know what "open loop" is you have no business doing any tuning until you learn the basics of PIDs

There's overboost which is limited only by imax, since there's no reaction whatsoever of the PID to the actual overboost.
And probably it's everywhere just riding imax, so there's no boost control actually happening.
What happens is as soon as there is significant change in environment conditions it will either overboost or underboost and since the PID has been made dysfunctional it will probably not react at all until it's out of static range, after which it'll go yo-yo.

Happens to people who think that boost tuning is just kfldimx. It's not.
Anyway, never mind the rant.

IMAX should only be used to restrict I windup. After that, the PID output should never ride IMX

So where is the problem in the map? KFLDIMX is tuned a little but cant see why PID is not reacting.

Do you even have a problem though, got boost creep yeah so what? Turbo is maxed, boost is pretty much the best it can get, bit of a standart pid overshoot on spool, then its okayish(in these conditions). Switch to precontrol maybe, that should reduce the work theoratically that the PID would have to do, specially on boost creeping setup.

you're at 95% DC what do you expect to happen? Not much more you can do except maybe try to mitigate the spike on spool

you're still dangerously close to out of fuel; not much left for BTS/ATR
