Title: Learning curve: what path to follow?
Post by: giowz0rd on January 29, 2022, 06:29:52 PM
Hello guys,

Pretty new here in NefMoto - but I already like how you guys spread information and help each others.

I already have a background in engine tuning/mechanical engineering due to my career, but I got a question that I would like your opinion:

For a noob tuner - is it worth to start flashing friend’s car with a Kess clone for learning purposes or it is better to follow directly the open source path?

The question may seem obvious (to follow the opensource directly), but I think I need to refine my tuning knowledges first.

How was your learning curves on tuning? Am I following the right path?

Thanks and sorry for the bad english! ::)

log first, as others have said, get a feeling how it all fits together, torque request, boost request, ldr, boost actual, req fuel, actual fuel, lambda control, timing, retard etc.

If Kess hangs on you and you brick the ecu, your friend will kill you. Prepare for that moment and be ready to unwind the clock.

You are right.

To solve it (if this happens), I should get a Galetto/MPPS or a KTAG to make possible to recover it in bench using bootmode. Right?

That is a good start.

Is the s4wiki tuning guide applicable to most cars with ME7.x.x?

I use clones of galletto and mpps. Kess I also have but being a clone can't do bootmode without mods. I also have a blue ft232 cable for copying the eeprom, which is the first  thing you need to do. You may wanna do the dsg one day and for that I have no idea of what cheap crap to get. Kess once again can do it but not without modding the board on the clone.
