Title: audi q7 3.0tdi intermittant smoking at idle
Post by: airtite on March 16, 2022, 02:10:05 AM
Back again... OK so tha car has been running really well after fixing the fuel temp sensor (thx PRJ), I am trying to get the car through our local road worthy and they have failed it on the smoking at idle issue.

The EGR delete is still in place, our emissions here are not that strict but obviously a car smoking at idle grabs their attention.

Logging mb 13 and 14 I am seeing Injection Quantity Deviation for cyl 1 sitting at 1.36 everything else is close to or at 0, before I go start replacing injectors etc am I correct that its cyl 1 and not cyl 1 compensating for cyl4?

Log attached.

Wrong groups.
Check injection correction iirc 41-47 groups or something like that.

If even one injector has more than 40 deviation, and you get blue-ish smoke and bad smell at idle when hot, replace them all with Bosch new ones they are leaking. If you get the exchange version it should be about 1.8-2k for all 6. Don't bother replacing one at a time, they never go bad one at a time...
The new ones will need to be coded.

Avoid third party refurbs and knockoffs.

P.S. EGR keep deleted, no good comes from it, I would de-flap it as well (remove the manifolds and physically remove the flaps and the motors, don't leave them dangling) and code the flaps out, since they are only useful when EGR is active.
But either way the smoke issue is almost always the injectors, the first gen piezos are a known weak point. If you want to keep the car for any number of time, then new replacement is the only way to go.

these are pretty much the measuring blocks I see for my bug engine code

Sorry dude, it's been ages.

They start at 71 or 72, each group details the adaptations in injection time for different rail pressures for one individual injector.

I dont really have the cash to replace all the injectors at the moment so will have to play around and see if I can get it to at least not smoke as much

You can not play around with anything. The injectors are worn, they are leaking fuel. There is nothing you can do besides replacing them to fix it, if the 71-77 groups have high values (>40).
Continuing to operate the vehicle like this eventually leads to cracks in the heads and the pistons and also molten piston crowns at prolonged WOT operation, especially when calibration is not stock.

ok so logged 72-77 and all of them are below -40 max is -32 for injector number 1 and -30 for injector 2 and the lowest is -12 for injector 6, I have a whole set of 2nd hand injectors would it be worth my while to try swap out the injectors 1 and 2 which are in the -30 range and see if the smoking at idle when hot goes away?

No, they're fucked. All "second hand" are going to be the same. Doesn't have to be -40, if it's close to it, and it's smoking, then they're leaking.
Buy new injectors or get rid of the car if you can't afford it.

Eventually you'll melt a piston.
Last I checked it was around 1.5-1.6k for 6 original new injectors if the old ones are returned. Ofc the seats should be re-cut and washers changed as well.
If you can't afford 1.5k, you shouldn't be driving this.

thanks for the feedback.... things are a little more pricey here in the bottom end of africa but I hear what you are saying. I will have to import them and 1.5k is 23211,68 of our rands and thats not even including shipping.....

Unfortunately there's no shortcuts on this. Get Bosch remanufactured ones, that's the only thing that will work.
Everything else you buy, knockoffs on eBay etc, will either not work properly at all or will fail in less than half a year.

Only OEM will do then you're sorted for another 200 000 km.
