Title: Bricked my s4 abox and can't get it into boot mode
Post by: corradovolksb on November 14, 2012, 09:05:22 PM
Hi everyone. I was flashing a new file to my 2000 s4 using Nefmoto flasher today and it reached 100% and then said unable to exit and would not reconnect to the ecu and the mil does not light up. I attempted to put it into boot mode one the bench with a rigged up harness I made and also attempted to do it in the car using Galletto and canot get boot mode to activate. I have a constant 13v to the ecu. The only thing I don't have is resisters on the power wire to ecu pin 27 and the boot mode ground wire. I have followed the Guides from here and audizine with no luck. Any suggestions or should I get another ECU? Also one of the smaller chips gets really hot within a few seconds. Not sure if thats an indication my ecu is toast or if its because the flash failed. Thanks in advance.

wrong pin #. 24, not 27.

Oh man that was a typo. I ment and was using 24.

which chip exactly gets hot? hot usually = dead.

Did the car have any indications of a failing ecu prior to the flash?

If you are looking at the ecu from the connector side it was the small square one at the upper left hand corner of the ecu. I'll try and post a pic of it later.

Did the car have any indications of a failing ecu prior to the flash?
No it has been running great until this point. I have flashed this ecu at least 30 times in the past without any indication of the ecu starting to fail.

Do you have a spare ecu on hand?

No wish I did. I will prob have to buy one today if I can't get it to work.

I have a K box from an 00 A6 that I can flash to an S4 A box for you.

Thank you very much for the offer. Turns out my ecu is toast but my friend hooked me up with an mbox and my S4 is up and running again.  :) thank you to all that gave advise. I will be more careful from now on.

What exactly did you do wrong? You said you successfully flashed this particular ecu many times? Why now did it fail? And because of the programming fail caused a hardware fault?

no. he said the flash crapped out while flashing with nefmoto (not uncommon) and he tried to bootmode it. obviously his bench flash did not go as planned. that is what i gather from all his posts.

My main problem was that I didn't have a battery charger hooked up when I was flashing it. I was in a hurry and didn't hook one up so that was my 1st mistake. 2nd was when I tried to put it in boot mode I slipped off pin 24 and touch pin 23 with ground and after that nothing would happen and one of the chips was getting very hot right away.  I have learned my lesson the hard way. From now on I will use a charger.

Flashed loads of cars without any charger, and I don't believe one is needed either if you use the right tools.
As for shorting something in the ECU - you should not even be touching the pins, there are two pads near the MCU...

That said, not all people have the motor coordination to work with fine pitch SMD electronics, you need a steady hand.

i never use a battery charger either. were you using a resistor between ground and ecu when trying to bootmode?

Ya for sure I have flashed my car many times with out a charger and no problems also but this time I was thinking it has something to do with it. I wish I saved the flash log from Nefmoto so you could see when the error occurred.

HAHA ya I was a little shaky when I was trying to touch the boot pin prob adrenalin from the thought of fucking up my ecu. Yes I now realize that I can use the pad next to the mcu instead of pin 24 but I was going off other people posts about using pin 24 for boot mode.

No I didnt have a resister on it so that could have also been the issue. I need a 5.5k ohm one right?

You don't need a resistor on these.
The reason you blew up your ECU is probably because you shorted 5V and god knows what else to ground or worse.
