Title: A4 Instrument cluster modding
Post by: hihptsi on December 10, 2010, 03:14:35 AM
I am wondering what you guys think about modding the info display in the A4 platform,id imagine this would be modded to work with other clusters as well. I would need to obtain a .bin file first and then dissassemble it. But my ideas are as follows some are dumb ideas some are useful but here it goes.there is2 buttons on the windshield wiper stalk to cycle thru gas mileage, miles to empty etc. above this there is another section that can be used. the down button will cycle only the bottom screen, the top button will cycle the display above. here are my ideas.

*Switchable info via the windshield wiper stalk button, the up button will cycle what info it will display
Customized greeting upon startup.
Wideband display in units of AFR.
boost guage ( must upgrade map sensor and rescale the map in the ecu.)

if anyone has any other ideas please share, and if anyone would like to possibly help please let me know. would like to make this a group projec.t :)

So true! Only my 2001.5 A4's is readable. The S4 cannot communicate anything to me, sort of like a neurotic girlfriend!

I successfully did the ebay LCD swap last week and it was easier than I expected.  You don't need a hot air station either.  Total cost: $65, a beer, and an hour's work.  I need to order some new white LED's to brighten my needles up too.

I would like the ability to display knock activity and fuel trims.

How does one obtain a bin file form the cluster?

desolder eeprom and read it in a programmer. or i think vagtacho will do it.

Is it also possible to read out flash memory (besides the eeprom) of the instrument cluster?
Or does it just have read protected memory embedded in a CPU?

Guys, there is anotherway maybe.  The cluster on my car has a private data link to the sat nav,  there are clock, gnd and data wires.  The data appears to be a priority message followed by a bitmap.

Other cars move the data from the satnav to the display via the infotainment canbus.

This might be an easier entry point to insert our wideband, boost, cool boot logo etc...

Looks like it's time to fix my display! (and play some Snake!) :)

By the way, i found this:

Seems to work for MKV only but then I saw this:

Attached is a summary page of B5 Audi instrument cluster pin outs.

Does anyone know off hand which data lines the commands that control the instrument cluster display come on? Is it the CAN bus, K-wire, or Clock/Data/Enable lines?

If I get a chance I will record some data logs with my logic analyzer.

I have a working VAG-Tacho, that reads and writes my 2002 MKIV GTI, never been able to get it to read the 2003 A4 though.  Think you're up against a newer system in the B6 gen A4's.  It is a small amount of data that comes from the read along the lines of the ECU eeprom.  Only been able to do mileage and mods to dash lights.

Seems no progress in this?
I had some hope to get the firmware in the instrument cluster disassembled in order to add 1-2 menu items in the MFA, some information which is available on CAN bus already.

additionally the MFA stick could be used to switch some maps with ECU mods instead of the CC stick, which not every one has installed
