Title: Same ECU number, different letter
Post by: klev on February 27, 2013, 03:50:19 PM
Hi

I have swap my tiptronic to 6 speed manual in my Allroad now.

2001 2.7 turbo europe ARE engine. ECU number is 4Z7 907 551 C.

I read and read and read on this forum, and might have found out that i can use an ecu number that has a different letter behind..?
As long the number is 4Z7 907 551 it will be no problem?

Or can i use other ECU number?

Regards
Vegar

I don't believe allroads ever came with anything other than a 1mb flash chip, so all allroad ecu's should interchange (on a hardware level).

Personally, I'd buy any old ecu and flash the file I wanted. It's worth noting though I've been wrong before (AND MAKE SURE IT'S ME7.1 NOT ME7.1.1!!! 7.1.1 will plug in, and has the same vag-prefix (all start 4z7907551) but won't work!)

So i can use the same number, but what ever letter?
Then i will not do anything with the immobilizer?

If i use ECU number from S4 that has stage 1. What will happens then?

I try to understand it, but there is a lot of information at once    :P

No, you can't use the same number but whatever letter.  ME7.1 and ME7.1.1 use the same base part numbers in many instances and the last letter(s) make all the difference.  There are wiring differences between ME7.1 and ME7.1.1 cars.

In NA 2001 is still ME7.1; not sure about Norway.  Since you have converted to MT6, you *should* be able to use an M-box file, but you may lose some functions such as ride height control; not sure about that, but it seems likely.  Best bet is to continue researching (even using the Ebay method of searching for an ECU for the configuration you want, i.e Allroad, 2001, manual trans and see what numbers people have to offer -- obviously I would not trust that information solely as there are a lot of folks selling stuff that don't know what's what, but it can yield clues).

Then, either look for a file on here that suits your needs and is compatible or much better yet roll your own.  I would not do anything until you figure out how to get yourself out of the various jams you will find yourself in before you need to.  i.e., get yourself a spare ECU, make sure you can get it into boot mode, etc.

As to IMMO, that's a separate topic and suggest you look in the directory on this site for exact steps.  DD has put together excellent tutorials.

It seem that my engine is ME7.1, and ME7.1.1 come in 2002. My allroad is produced late 2000.
Or can i find it with vag-com?

Mbox mean that ecu number is: 4Z7 907 551 M ?

M-box refers to an s4 ecu, 8d0907551m. When you hear of a box being referred to as a letter designation, the s4 is being referenced.

2000 is definitely 7.1.

I can try 8d0907551m then?
I just need the car drive abel, so I continue to look for the right type of file later.

Flash S4 "M" tune and that's it. It works 100% good and is what we up here in USA do routinely - reflash 6 speed ME 7.1 allroads with S4 "M" tune. The only side ffect will be lost immobilizer functionality though.
