Title: Help me finish my allroad Tip to 6spd swap.
Post by: Jibber on August 06, 2013, 11:26:39 PM
Hello, Im Josh and have quite a bit of ecu flash tuning experience. (Mostly subaru and mitsubishi)

I have a 2001 Allroad that my wife drives. After a little better than a year with the TC lockup code the Tip trans finally died. We choose to keep the car and convert it to the 6 speed that we were looking for when we purchased it.

The mechanical portion of the swap is finished. I pulled the image from the car last night [see below]. I tried unsuccessfully to softcode this to a MT. However, this does not appear possible.

I suppose I would like to flash this to the 551 m software from an S4 with no immobilizer. I have been reading as much as I can, but my wife really wants her car back. Can anyone please take some time to walk me through this. I currently am not looking too tune this up as it is completely stock. Well maybe just look over the fueling....

I am currently concerned with picking the proper M box file and XDF to get this going with or without the immobilizer. I just do not want to accidentally flash the wrong image as it seems that these are more common to hang than what I normally tune.

I could also use help getting the cluster, and abs recoded. I tried to recode with a vag can cable (genuine) and was unsucessfull. I pulled this with my early tactrix 1.3 cable and have an ebay vag k+can cable en route. I also have a back up 2000 a6 mt box as well.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Josh

BTW anyone online or in the greater Seattle area that can help, I will gladly make it worth your while.

I also have a back up 2000 a6 mt box as well.

Start with this; see if you can bench flash the spare to s4 M using nefmoto.

If you dont have a bench flasher, you can try it in car, but you may have to disable immo first in the cluster.. check the immo forum for details on that. .... or try bootmode in the car. tricky, but possible if you have a second set of hands to help you.

then, once you get that working, we can work on recoding the abs/cluster etc.

Awesome, thanks nyet for the quick reply!!

I will work on trying to get the spare flashed.

I do not have a bench flasher however I do have a spare engine harness I could get the connectors and make one. I will work on getting that going after work tonight.

Many thanks again for giving me some better direction.

also, if you can get the spare flashed to m-box you won't have to worry about immo at all..

Can you please point me in the direction of the correct m box file for mt? I am trying to gather the parts and assemble the bench flasher right now.

Thanks again!

Josh

You don't need a bench flasher. Since the ecu is still paired with the immobilizer, just flash it in car. Shouldn't be an issue. Just remember! If ANYTHING happens, DO NOT turn the key off. You can reconnect, try again, etc, but once you turn the key off she's done.

Just sayin, he's got the spare ECU.... might be safer to start with that. And having a bench setup handy is always a good thing just in case.

But yea, I agree, if he is feeling frisky he can just overwrite his current ecu.. but he (technically) should make a backup of the ECU eeprom etc, and thats a whole 'nother ball of wax.

2000 ecu in a 2001 will require removing the guide pin from the large ecu connector. A lot of people are uncomfortable with that :P

I already removed the portion of the a6 connector. I save everything so I will definitely pull the image from the spare before flashing.

This whole thing has been really stressful for my family! Thankfully you guys are helping me out along the way through the part that I need the most assistance.

I just picked up a power supply and will hopefully be successful shortly.

Ok backup ecu flashed. and test drive completed. I want to flash my allroad ecu now. It says "preconditions not met immobilizer not authenticated"

Do I continue?

Title: Re: Help me finish my allroad Tip to 6spd swap.
Post by: nyet on August 07, 2013, 09:03:42 PM
You will not be able to bench flash that ecu w/o using boot mode. but now that you have a functioning backup, you can try flashing that one while it is in the car.

also, since you have a proven functioning bench flasher, you are home free. no matter what happens you will ALWAYS be able to use the bench flasher with an ECU in bootmode to flash it using galletto...

grats :)

I'd leave your stock ecu stock for now. No need to flash it, instead use the spare, take your time and read up on making a backup of your eeprom (they can, and do become corrupted during flashing).

Check out the "understanding/retrofitting immobilizer" sticky in the cluster section!

Makes sense.

Thank you for helping me through this!! I should have my k + can cable tomorrow to try to get the abs and dash coded.

Again thank you!

The cable you used for flashing can be used with VCDS lite to recode all that and more. No need to wait!

So I have borrowed a proper vac com cable and im struggling to get the abs module recoded.

I have been following this:

Reprogramming
Ignition on but no start
Cluster
Adaption, channel 60, set to 1025 (removes Transmission from CAN Bus)
Ignition Off
ABS
Use Tip login code : 07497, or 07397, 07597
ReCode to 6spd : 06395
Ignition Off
ECU
If recoding a Tip ECU
Login with 11463
Recode to 6spd : 06711
Ignition off
Ignition back on
Clear codes in Cluster, ABS, ECU
ECU Throttle Body Adaption
Set Block channel 60

from here

http://s4wiki.com/wiki/Tip_To_6spd_Conversion

I have tried as many combinations as I can find currently

Also the first time I pulled the TCU I had the "push clutch to start" message but no there is nothing. Car still starts and runs.

Title: Re: Help me finish my allroad Tip to 6spd swap.

Recode the ecu to 06711.

06=North American
7=ABS with ESP
1=Manual trans
1=S4

See if that helps.

Any thoughts on the listed brown 15 pin connector in right kick panel? I can only find larger number brown plugs

Title: Re: Help me finish my allroad Tip to 6spd swap.
Post by: ddillenger on August 09, 2013, 09:54:44 PM
This is what I would do for your cluster:

0=nothing
1=engine
2=automatic transmission
1024=instrument cluster
2048=self leveling suspension

1+1024+2048=3073

You should have a value of 3073 in channel 60.

That corrected a com error. Now I have only the abs code coming up from the abs (incorrect coding) and suspension

Login to ABS using 06397, then change your softcoding to 06395. After that, you should be able to clear the rest of the errors.

Plug your TCU back in and try again.

should be 06397 or 07397. If you have HP2 brakes, 07597.

However, 06397 should have worked assuming that was your OEM abs module. If it's not, you must login with the original softcoding.

Still no love

It won't allow you to change the coding because you're selecting an invalid configuration. Try coding to 07495.

Good deal! Now just clear the rest of the codes and you should be finished!

On another note, I'd be interested in buying or borrowing your TCU. I don't have any allroad files in my collection. PM me when you get a chance!

I owe you at least that. Pm me your full name and address and I will try to get it out Monday. Only one requirement: once you dump it's contents you sell it and use the proceeds for your car

Also I have the corresponding ecu file I saved before I flashed the m box file.

I would also like to make a contribution to the board. Premium flashing suitable or just a donation?

Great job! Glad it worked out..

Premium license to the Nef flasher is really nice to have if you intend to do any tuning..

And sending free stuff to DD is always a good idea :)

Update:

The fam and I took the car for a 800 mi weekend outing. All bugs are officially out. In disconnecting and reconnecting the dash the "push clutch to start" message even returned.

All software is as it should have been from the factory.

Many many thanks to all that helped!

Hi,
Glad you have successfully completed your project, I`m  going to flash the c5 a6 which used to be TIP with the M-box file,  so have you returned your immo back? Or how have you coded the cluster? Because when I have flashed M-box file to my S4 which was H-box  I had to recode the cluser.
thanks :)

Yes, I recoded the cluster, abs computer and flashed the ecu to m box

I have no desire for the immobilizer there is now none.
