Title: Runner flap delete on 2.0tfsi
Post by: n0ble on October 25, 2013, 12:56:48 PM
Hi all,

As per the title is the runner flap delete really worth the time and money on a 2.0tfsi with say a hybrid k04 fitted?

Thanks

Thanks for your efficient use of words :-)

What is the intentional benifit of RFD?

Air velocity into the chamber.

Ok thanks.

So based on matchew's response, I'm assuming that research has indicated that RFD is not that beneficial?

No it is not, you lose some spool/torque in my experiences.  Only reason I even deal with it is for people who have HEP manifold for example, where having no runners is their only option!

Thanks for the insight.  Much appreciated.

APR's claims of 10-15 HP gains are also bogus.

You will loose a lot of torque in low and mid range.

I prefer not to delete them, except in bigturbo applications

Cool. I was just looking for other littke mods, I guess this is now not one of them :-)

Maybe a new intake pipe to replace the OE crushed version?

Its maybe a good thing for torque, but its not reliable and costs a lot of money. And problems are not only with VAG cars, but for example, with Mercedes also. Plastic crap, IMHO.

havent had many problems with runner motors, they are not too pricey here in the states 2nd hand if you want to take your chances.

VAG has extension warranty on these in USA as well so its no big deal for us to keep them :)

What are talk about?
Just read self-study manual SSP337 and will be clear -  intake manifold flaps do nothing (and can't do) for increasing power or torque.
Flaps are closed only by very low engine load, swirling air flow for better mixture prepair and reduce misfires.
All other time flaps are fully open.
Delete flaps is equal "open allways"

Hmm... I'm going to delete runner from Audi Q7 4.2fsi today)The same thing was on Audi Q7 3.0tdi, though owner changed it to the new one before.
Also Mercedes E klass and G270cdi had the same problem. And my friend works in Audi and he told me that there are a lot of problems with runners.
Maybe used runners cost not so much, but new runner costs some hundreds. And it would be ok if it works for a long time instead of some monthes))

Off top: Actualy I dont like a quality of new cars. For example Audi Q5 35 000 miles, problems with S-tronic, ignition coils. Pistons and rings were changed. But its not the cheapest car, though its not Bugatti)

Thank very much for that useful info! As the saying goes, if nothing helps read the manual  ;D

P.S. I have copied it from SSP337:

The tumble flaps
Since the engine is operated in homogenous mode, the tumble flaps are used to improve the internal
mixture formation.
At low loads, in a speed range from 1000 rpm to
5000 rpm, the tumble flaps are closed:
- to improve idling speed quality on a
cold engine
- to increase the tumble effect and thereby
improve smooth running of the engine
- in overrun to prevent engine jolts
In other speed ranges, the tumble flaps are open
to avoid any resistance to flow and thereby a
reduction in performance.

i'd only do that if my flap motor goes bad again..mostly cuz i dont want to pay for it now that im out of warranty. free to just remove and code  ;)

Ive found slightly better overall response and better top end power (Bum dyno only) with them deleted. (K04) Big turbo we delete them as there is lag down low anyway. A lot of stuffing around IMO if you only have a K04.
