Title: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: ddillenger on July 29, 2014, 01:45:50 PM Doing this will earn you the right to ask me any number of weird, noob, or challenging questions you can come up with indefinitely. Or, I will define your file, or do some other random task in return.
This how to should start with driver setup, troubleshooting connectivity, memory layouts, baud rates, and finally culminate with reading one's file. Pictures are a must. Let's do this! Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: zillarob on July 29, 2014, 10:31:25 PM Might be a good idea to start with hardware.
Best bet would prob be a decent laptop with win7. The lappys with the fruit on them are fancy and all, but you will need to put the antichrist software on there anyway, so just get another one so you dont taint the fruity one. The robot ones prob arent going to work. If you have a penguin one, well, you prob dont need a guide. Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: ddillenger on July 29, 2014, 10:38:07 PM You just made me laugh.
Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: nyet on July 29, 2014, 10:58:12 PM that post is 100% win
Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: turboat on July 30, 2014, 04:40:47 AM LOL! As it happens, I need to set up my diagnostics laptop, so I'll have a stab at writing down what I do along the way.

Post by: turboat on July 30, 2014, 12:54:15 PM First draft attached. Feel free to hit track changes and add comments, or just edit away. I think it needs more examples of which car goes with which memory layout (both my 2.7 and my 1.8 are 1024, so I have limited experience on that) and if there are other common issues, they should be added to the troubleshooting sections.
Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: nyet on July 30, 2014, 12:55:18 PM Ugh are we really going to use docx for this?
Sigh. Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: turboat on July 30, 2014, 01:46:12 PM I was assuming this would end up on the wiki or as a forum post, the draft is only a docx because its an easy way to put pictures, formatting into a doc and have comments from multiple people. Personally I'd rather use gerrit for comment and review tracking, but I'm format flexible...let me know what you prefer :)
Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: userpike on July 30, 2014, 07:48:10 PM content removed. I dunno what happened.. I guess I didn't read the whole thread and was watching Shaknado2. It was amazing but the first one was better. So I woulda wrote the guide if you experienced Sharknado but I see it's already been started.
Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: turboat on July 31, 2014, 12:52:37 AM I need to go watch sharknado :) feel free to review and add to the getting started guide :)

I don`t know where to start.I have zero expirience writing down a guide :/ Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: ddillenger on July 31, 2014, 09:01:02 AM TCS:
Read the document that has been posted, and try to do so as a noob. If you think any of it is unclear, or see an area that you struggled with, add to it :) Keep up the good work guys! Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: TCSTigersClaw on July 31, 2014, 10:55:47 AM I did some minor comments , they are ** with bright marking . My English are not good but you can add them to the final guide. What else to do guys I am thinking

Volunteers? Post by: TCSTigersClaw on August 01, 2014, 05:27:59 PM hmm I am sure about that :P
Anyway back to the topic , what else does a guide need ? Maybe a FAQ ? Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Maybe some links to drivers, threads, etc? Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: TCSTigersClaw on August 02, 2014, 12:55:49 AM Ok I did some very basic Links and FAQ. I just test it to see how it looks like that. It need a lot more polishing I will do a version 2

I updated it some more.. Some minor fixes (somewhere the was ODB instead of OBD) , some more links (boot mode) ,deleted a complete blank page (page 5) ,fixed permenant instead of permanent, added the drag and drop choice @ Me7check etc . Some native English speaker please check again for mistakes Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Volunteers? Post by: insomniacxp1 on August 04, 2014, 04:05:13 PM Hey guys,
First I'd like to say thank you for taking initiative as something like this would have been perfect when I first started lurking around. I know all the information is here, but rattling my brain around trying to think of search terms or words for what I was looking for proved unpromising. I thought possibly a couple comments by a noob would help, considering this is supposed to be for noobs hah. I'll keep it short. - love the 'what's next' - FAQ is good, covers everything I would I have asked/liked to know - more info on boot mode? possible section for it. Making your own apparatus. Grounding pin/connecting/ect. I realize the FAQ has a link to the 'how-to'. Maybe add in what is a k-line, why do we need to connect it, can-low, can-high. Someone with an early 1.8 may not know they don't have can-bus. - Possible return ecu to stock/switching tunes section? For the individual who has 93/e85. stock/93 ect. - Appendix a good idea? I know you guys don't want to make this a 68 page doc, because we know if your trying to search on audizine/vortex "how to bleed brakes", jumping head first into this probably isn't the best idea for ya. But maybe pepper in a couple more sentences and add a section or two. I know it's not in final form, just trying to give some constructive criticism from a noob pov. Would edit the doc, but I feel the additions are best left to some advanced people here that know their way around the stuff. Hope this helps! - Mike Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: turboat on August 04, 2014, 04:12:12 PM Cheers for the comments, may well add some comments about loading different maps on.
Re the canbus - is it relevant? For coding out modules, maybe, but from a tuning/mapping perspective it doesn't seem too important. Just thought I should add something on checksums. Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: ddillenger on August 04, 2014, 04:19:39 PM I will ask that when this is done it gets posted here, I will go through and neaten it all up :)
All that contribute will receive credit for their contribution. A couple of you might even find some custom user tags under your names-lol. Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: TCSTigersClaw on August 05, 2014, 04:28:09 AM I also started another version, well basically is what it is done so far but instead of links (Boot mode ,well boot mode is: this "LINK"_) I add text .Ofcourse in the end there will be links for the sources.
I will cover the boot mode next , complete how too , with pictures of mine ,what resistors to use etc. I am just confused is that guide about Nefmoto software ? Or generally about ME7 ? :P Because nefmoto can`t boot so , I think we are going to far ? no ? Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: ddillenger on August 05, 2014, 04:42:22 AM Particularly the nefmoto software, how to read, how to write, what to troubleshoot, etc.

I would probably have seperate howto's for boot mode, immo, etc - if we have one big howto, no-one will read it and we'll be back where we started! Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: TCSTigersClaw on August 05, 2014, 07:19:52 AM hmmm thats right , ok but as Daz said ,we need a Nefmoto only guide , I think we overdid it with Me7check ,boot mode, winols/tunerpro etc.
Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: turboat on August 05, 2014, 08:11:42 AM I think we've done ok, everything that is in there is stuff that comes up a lot :)
DD - feel free to cut down if you want Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: turboat on August 05, 2014, 09:22:07 AM Posted the howto as a new thread here: http://nefariousmotorsports.com/forum/index.php?topic=6537.0title=
lets keep comments/discussion on this thread, and I can go edit it as required. Right now, I think it needs troubleshooting info for writing flash. Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: ddillenger on August 05, 2014, 10:30:07 AM Can you add a picture of how to get the vag-com cable in dumb mode?
Otherwise, it's looking good. Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: turboat on August 05, 2014, 10:55:23 AM Done.
Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: nyet on August 05, 2014, 11:30:39 AM Excellent! Stickied.
Thank you! Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: thelastleroy on August 05, 2014, 05:01:02 PM This is awesome guys, thanks for putting this all down in one place. Should keep the same rookie questions down, new threads on old topics etc. I'm reading a lot, and when my new cable comes in, I'm going to get started. This guide will be perfect for the first read/write.
Cheers ;D Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: Allabout on August 05, 2014, 05:29:29 PM I'll happily participate in this.
Once tested, if anything is unclear, I'll happily adjust accordingly and upload the document. thanks for all the info. Title: Re: I want a how to guide. Volunteers? Post by: Allabout on August 06, 2014, 04:03:40 PM already updated my findings on the other thread.
Once I know how to establish which memory layout file to use with a specific ECU. Like Tony@Nefmoto, I too have a 2000 S4 and a 2007 Golf GTI Stage 2 (which I would like to retune). Title: Re: Post by: Tony@NefMoto on August 12, 2014, 11:53:45 AM Thanks for taking the time to put these guides together. If possible please try to use the wiki because then people can continue to improve it, and google can index the info.
