Title: B5 A4 cluster mileage change
Post by: seanf on March 05, 2015, 04:11:50 PM
Not sure if this is a sticky topic here but I've changed the cluster on my wifes car and would like to set the mileage in the cluster to accurately reflect the actual mileage on the chassis. Car has 240-241k kms on it and cluster says 171k so in essence I'd be raising it. I have vag k commander 2.5 which I used to pull the skc on her new B6 and I have a china blue cable and unlicenced vag com. I see the mileage option in k commander but I want to know that changing it there is the right way to do it and don't want to brick the cluster. I know that when you enter the new mileage its x100 so 241000 would be entered as 24100. If I do need licence vag com I have 2 friends within 20 min of me with hex can so not a big deal there either. Car is a prefacelift 99 2.8 with a vdo cluster and analog clock with the numbers.

All help is appreciated.

Try VAG EEPROM Programmer, it's free and works with typical blue cables. I don't like vag commander, tried to use it to change mileage once and it just wouldn't work.

It works, but it writes to ram. Changes aren't committed to memory until you unplug the cluster for 5+ seconds.

You can with vag commander 2.5 read eprom bin from cluster, edit the first line in that bin (in A4B5 mileage is written there),then write that edited bin to cluster.Press read button again and odometer in program will show new, edited mileage.Press button "change" and instrument cluster will show new mileage.Complicated, but I'm totally new to all this stuff and that's how I did it.
Pardon my bad english :)

I will give that a shot, I still have the old cluster with bad LCD so I'm gonna plug that one in and toy around incase I brick it its not a big deal.

well I got it done!!!! after you read the cluster and type your new mileage in exactly as you would like to see it and hit change, exit out of everything and unplug all 3 cluster connectors for 5 seconds, plug everything back in and BAM new mileage on the cluster, I did this with some internet version of vag k commander 2.5.
