Title: Car wont start - help!
Post by: L1011 on July 16, 2011, 04:25:15 PM
So im stranded.  My 02 gti 1.8t wont start.  It cranks perfecr but nothing else.  Tach reads 0 while cranking.  Last week I flashed a new image with minor changes.  Redid checksums and everything was good.  No problems what so ever.  Only thing is today I took a longer trip than my usual 15min?  Is this a checksum error?  Of course, I dont have my computer or cable with me.

Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

Check for codes. If it is a checksum error you will have "Internal Control Module" (or something like that) error code.

Thanks for the reply.  My equipment is in route so ill update when I know more.  If it is that, a flashing the stock image back should reset everything, right?

po601 internal control module - Memory check sum error

Trying to flash stock file but keeps coming back.  Still no start.  How do I resolve this?

Update -

Now CEL does not turn on
VAG COM cannot connect to engine module
NefMoto cannot connect

Any guidance on getting this back?  Boot mode perhaps?

P0601 says that your problem is in serial EEPROM
You must properly recover eeprom content...

I know it's too late now, but order a Galletto cable... It saved my ass last week when I loaded a file with an incorrect checksum.  I also didn't have any comm with Nefmoto or VCDS.  But I was able to recover with boot mode + Galletto.

It happened to me because I opened a new XDF and didn't even think about the checksum plug-in not being setup on it.  That learned me!

I'll be ordering one tonight.  I really need this car to run asap, so I'm looking for a vendor that has the fastest shipping.  Anyone know of a place that ships from inside the USA?

Thanks.

If you have an eeprom error then a Galletto cable will not fix the problem, if it is/was a problem with the flash checksum then Galletto will help as it sounds as though your flash is corrupted to the point of the ECU no longer booting.

You will probably need to use boot mode to reprogram the stock image. At that point you will most likely still have a checksum error being reported. You can then flash the stock image a second time using Nefmoto and it should clear it.

You need to flash the EPROM with a clip and a programmer.

There is no way to fix this by just flashing another tune/file/binary/whatever you want to call it.

Does anyone have any insight how this may have happened in the first place? I understand the purpose and existence of check sums in the flash, but how did the eeprom corrupt itself?

as someone else wrote before, you may have such a bad tuned or wrong file and the ecu can't boot. i had the same problem when i couldn't find an original for my ecu and tried to flash an original file from a different ecu version. i managed to recover with china galletto and boot mode. There is no need to bench flash the ecu you can do it on the car. I don't think that is something wrong with your eeprom since the nefmoto flash program doesn't mess with it.
Good luck ;)

Not strictly true. NefMoto does trigger a write to E2 during a flash. A simple ID string if I remember correctly. I'll post Tony's description if I can find the thread.

Got my galletto cable.  Can't get it to work.  Keeps saying boot moot inactive.  I am doing the procedure just as outlined by the many threads I've found while searching.

I'm about ready to throw the towel in...

are you sure your grounding the right pin on the flash?

Also you need to ground it before turning on the power to the ECU, and then release it shortly after.

I am grounding the right pin as far as what all the images show.  When flashing in-car, will the CEL pop on when its in boot mode?

I don't recall sorry.

you sure your GND source is good?  when in doubt go right from the battery.

Do you have other cable drivers installed that could conflict with the galletto cable?

in boot mode the cel doesn't appear. You are doing something wrong my friend. First remove the fuse that galletto sugests. I think is for the instruments. Then to be sure remove the big plug from ecu and leave the other one the smaller . This is the one needed for the boot mode-bench flash. Then locate the f800 chip. And DO NOT GROUND to battery but connect these pins as shown in the picture. That worked for me very well good luck.

Thats what I'm doing.  I have the fuse pulled and the pin is grounded.  I tried both a 1k resistor and straight ground.  I have tried on three different computers.  One had a fresh install of windows 7 and had no other drivers installed.  I also tried on my windows xp machine.  It also had no other drivers and doesn't even connect to the internet.  Consantly the same error "boot mode inactive".  I can't think of anything else.

Try to remove the "big" plug from the ecu it is not needed for boot mode. You only need +12V, ground, +12V ignition, and K-line. All of them are in the smaller plug of the ecu. Also have in mind that you must ground the ecu firstly with ignition off keep it grounded and then turn on ignition and keep it for 2 seconds more. The remove the "bridge" between the pins. I didn't have a proper cable and used a scrwedriver to do the connection  :o. Maybe your galletto isn't working. I told you everything i could. Good luck.

Update:

Boot mode works.  I didn't do anything different from before except had a friend to help and drank some beers.  Now ecu boots and nefmoto flasher connects.  However, VCDS still is unable to connect.  After clearing codes, p0601 continues to pop up.  I thought flashing original file again over obd would clear it, but apparently it is not.

Next I'm looking to reflash eeprom.  While I'm at it, I'm thinking a checksum disable and immo defeat would be worth while.  Off to read...

DO NOT mess with eeprom. Try nefmoto to flash again an original file NOT yours to be sure. It will clear the bad checksum problem. Also try to leave the ignition on for 30 minutes so that the ecu can "run" the new program. Also try to find proper edditing tools so that you won't have checksum problems all the time. I change programs to my car more offten that i am changing T-shirts without any problems. Dissabling the immo or something else won't help you at all. Regards.
