Title: Automakers to gearheads: Stop repairing cars
Post by: Three77 on April 21, 2015, 09:34:49 AM
Being that this is directly related to tuning, and to prompt discussion, I felt that this article should be placed here.
http://www.autoblog.com/2015/04/20/automakers-gearheads-car-repairs/

Any thoughts as to where this may be heading, or do you feel that it's a non-issue?

"Imagine an amateur makes a coding mistake that causes brakes to fail "

About sums up the article really...

I lol'd...
"Furthermore, automakers say these modifications could render cars non-compliant with environmental laws that regulate emissions."

Edit:
There are already federal laws in place that make it illegal to modify emissions control devices (ecus), why is this even needed?
It won't stop anyone anyway.

"Pro" tuners who claim copyright protection of their "work" should read this carefully

Quote
"In order to modify automotive software for the purpose of 'diagnosis and repair, or aftermarket personalization, modification, or other improvement,' the modifier must use a substantial amount of the copyrighted software - copying the software is at issue after all, not wholly replacing it," the AGA claimed. "Because the 'heart,' if not the entirety, of the copyrighted work will remain in the modified copy, the amount and substantiality of the portion copied strongly indicates that the proposed uses are not fair."

LOL.
