Title: Suggested Power Supply Voltage for Toggle Switch Feed Using FGTech V54?
Post by: Mechsoldier on May 23, 2015, 12:39:08 AM
I have FGtech V54, I am going to use it just for boot mode (I also own Kess V2, but I need a boot mode backup). So anyway, I'm going to do an ME9 2.0t and in the videos and in the literature as shown here,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KPvVKLoD04

It shows that you have to feed the ECM a 12v and a ground. It doesn't tell any specs on how many amps that feed should be, it has ends like that would go to a precision scientific power supply, and I don't want to give it too many amps and kill the ECM or the box. I was going to use a 2 amp battery charger, but I had second thoughts and don't want to fry and ME9, I don't have any more of them. ME7 I have like they grow on trees but not an ME9. Any suggestions as to to amperage or wattage?

1/2 amp is fine.

MED9 are dirt cheap here. Certainly less than most ME7!

I don't want to give it too many amps and kill the ECM or the box.

That isn't how electricity works. I = V/R

In any case,  500mA is more than enough to power the ECM.

I would not use any battery charger without a battery connected. Without proper power drain it might give you silly high (16,5V+) voltage.

Yeah I get that I missed stated what I was saying about the voltage and amperage  thing. Regardless what I meant is the end intent, which is that a charger is too much and could smoke the ecm which I don't want.

Also regardless of the me9 online cost, I need to finish  this car up asap and I don't have any me9 laying around so I don't want to kill it. Thanks guys I will find a power supply wall outlet plug and mod it then.

You could stick it on a 20,000A supply and not fry it unless there is a fault. It will pull what it pulls.

But as above, 500ma would probably do the trick fine, maybe as much as 1a spike. If you are short of a PSU for it, then use a battery with the charger across it.

Decided I needed one of these instead. I can use it for lots of different things around the shop, I want to start tinkering with little arduino or raspberry pi maker kits with my son anyways, and it's just one less thing to worry about having a stable scientific grade voltage supply. 98 bucks with tax at Fry's Electronics, which  I fucking love that place btw.

Decent bench supply is always a good shout. Just remember to check the dials before you plug it in, wouldnt be the first time I've knocked one of the controls and stuck 17v up a ECU.

I've got a lightbulb I keep in my box with it now to give it a good test.
