Title: EDC17CP14 flashing Post by: seishuku on June 27, 2015, 05:49:52 PM So what are my DIY options for flashing my 2013 VW Jetta?
From my research, because of TPROT, it must be flashed via BDM? Have there been any developments for OBD flashing? I really don't want to cough up $600 for a "tune", as I'm mainly just looking for eventual DPF delete (once it starts being an issue), as well as EGR. I also like doing stuff my self. Title: Re: EDC17CP14 flashing Post by: ddillenger on June 27, 2015, 06:12:36 PM There is no BDM on those. It's tricore, bootmode if you will.
DIY options? Anything that can boot tricore ecus. I'd consider doing a bit more research, it's not always as easy as one pin. Title: Re: EDC17CP14 flashing Post by: k0mpresd on June 27, 2015, 08:31:09 PM bsl looks like bdm but not the same thing.
$600 for a tune is peanuts in comparison of the cost for a proper genuine tool and software to edit these correctly. In the fgtech manual its pointed what to do to make boot mode on different ecus. Year ago I bricked one passat edc17cp14 via obd...with help from friends I recovered it with bootmode. If you need some info I can help if I know how ;).

Seems to me that with this euro stuff, there's always some kind of black magic or subscription crap to deal with. If I were going to make a business of this, I wouldn't mind spending a little more, but for a personal project... I just can't justify a lot of $$ Title: Re: EDC17CP14 flashing Post by: naskoradew on August 09, 2015, 10:47:27 PM Eu clones had different elements inside and they are more stable when working. Elememts are the same (most of them) like on the original tool. I don't understand a lot...some of my friends read around and change the elements of the chinese clones, but at all price is almost the same (I paid for my 450euros). Also you can try with chinese one, when you have full boot mode you can restore the ecu allways. If you don't want to solder the boot pin buy a bdm frame also.

The prices I saw were between $50 and $200, I'm going to assume those are probably knock-offs. Also on TPROT, I read a post somewhere (don't remember where exactly) that if it's flashed by boot mode, it doens't need to be patched? That doesn't make sense to me, since that kind of defeats the purpose of TPROT, or is TPROT only to prevent OBD2 port flashing? Thanks for the info BTW! Title: Re: EDC17CP14 flashing Post by: prj on August 10, 2015, 04:03:25 PM It is a digital signature on the software.
There are bugs in the bootloader that can be exploited to flash unsigned code down the port. Bootmode is direct hardware access, and in EDC17CP14 it is not protected. However, in some newer ECU's the boot mode also has a password. On some cars it can be read out over OBD, on others a workaround has been found via ICE debugging. Yet others remain without a solution. I would not use clone tools or try to flash it by OBD. EDC17CP14 specifically will mess you up with incorrect sums, and recovery is not fully straightforward. Although having a full backup of all data of the ECU can help. Title: Re: EDC17CP14 flashing Post by: naskoradew on August 11, 2015, 09:39:18 AM I agree for OBD flashing...but my experiense with clones and CP14 on bootmode is OK. If you have full backup original files its fine. Also few months ago I had succesfully repaired bricked CP14 from passat with clone FGtech. The reason was attemp to make OBD write mod file with clone MPPS withouth thinking for tprot. EXTflash was unfull...eep had changes too...We did not had a boot read copy and it was interesting :D.
Title: Re: EDC17CP14 flashing Post by: seishuku on August 11, 2015, 10:27:32 AM Cool. I'll have to do some shopping for a MPPS or Galletto, and see what I can get working.
First thing I was planning on doing was a full backup, I never work with out one on an ecu, unless I have another way out. Another question, my jetta has a software update TSB for o2 sensitivity issues, should I get that done first, or would that risk getting more security added? |
