Title: Tuning NOOB 1st log help - '03 A6 2.7t
Post by: -TJ on October 30, 2015, 10:34:06 AM
Quick little background -
2003 A6 2.7t 6MT purchased as a fixer-upper 2 years ago.  Mainly needed a clutch and VCG's.  Beyond replacing the clutch and gaskets I haven't done anything to it.  My wife has taken it over as her DD.
Configuration as follows (basically the way we bought it):
  • stock K03's
  • Piggies
  • RS6 center exhaust with magnaflow mufflers
  • APR BiPipe
  • Adams EGT deletes
  • Supposed to have a GIAC chip

Hardly ever throws a CEL, most recently it was 16684/16685 Cyl 1 misfire.

Seems to me that boost has been stock since I got it on the road, which was fine initially because I was more concerned about reliability.  FF 2 years and I'm now just getting around to figuring out why.  I got the windows GIAC flashloader and "Stock" and "Pump" are the only available options with "pump" highlighted.  Before exiting I made sure to write the "pump" tune.  Didn't seem to make any difference.

Nyet was helpful over on QW and suggested I get a log.  So I got myself up to speed on exactly how to do that and today was able to log something.  As a complete noob to VAG tuning I'm not sure what I got is any good - basically had the wife co-pilot and start ME7 Logger, I got the car moving and once into 3rd just held it to the floor to redline.  CSV attached, nevermind the file date, the dinosaur laptop thinks it's 11/5/15.

So, hoping to get some experienced interpretation and an answer about the GIAC tune - is this representative of the pump tune performance?  If not WTF?  How do I activate it?

Thanks for anything,
-TJ

Looks stock. 12 taper to 8psi

2003 seems to be a funny year for tuners.

I have a 2003 MT allroad that had an APR "tune" on it when I got it.  It too, had a stock boost profile.  You could switch programs via CC stalk and when you switched to the race program, there was definitely switching to a more advanced timing map, but boost was still the same.

After working with APR on the issue, it turns out that they missed LDRXN for manual transmissions!!!

There are two LDRXN tables in these files, one for MT and one for AT.  My guess is that's probably what going on here too.

After learning how to tune myself, I can definitely see how they could miss this so easily.

I'm not saying that's what's going on here, but there's certainly a chance that it's the same deal.

Ha. Definitely seems likely. Interesting tidbit :)

So, if I wanted to check LDRXN, will I be able to read the [GIAC] ECU file via NM flasher/logger, edit if necessary, and write it back?  This would be my first foray into a Motronic ECU.
Reading up on how to use NM...
What is the memory layout for a 4Z7907551R ECU?  When I connect via VAG COM, I always see that ECU part number with a S at the end instead of an R...not sure what that means.  This is why I chose the 4Z7907551S.bin for the purposes of logging yesterday.

Anyway, 4Z7907551R ECU is ME7 29F800BB or BT?

Thank yoU!

If you want to test it, code your ecu the opposite trans type as it is now.

Ok, I tried that....no real noticeable difference except the throttle seemed more responsive and the light show on the dash...  Looks like boost difference between yesterday's log and today is +0.5psi.  Where's the boost?!

New log attached.

Haha-thanks Steve.

To the OP. It appears as though you......

Have a stock ecu.

Indeed it's going to need some gains since I've been driving it more.

BE CAREFUL! Unfortunately, that version of ME7.1 is buggy and you can brick your ecu. Try to get a spare ECU and/or make sure you have a functional bootmode setup or you could end up stranded!

Understand this about the 551S and flashing/reading with Nefmoto and you will be fine.  In short, use the 551R software.

Nothing to screw up. Just flash the 551R file.
