Title: 2005 S4 B6 Audi immobilizer or key issue. Post by: nitrorocket on November 07, 2015, 12:55:36 AM So I have a 2005 Audi S4 that has just had the motor redone. The car came from an auction, was 100% stock and did not run due to engine failure.
The mechanic bolted the ground wires to the engine, not the firewall. This was corrected, the car fires up perfectly and dies in 1 second each time its started. Seems the immibilizer must be activated. The problem is that I'm not sure if it was a ground fault issue that caused the worst problem, or if the immobilizer became disconnected from the ECU because the computer was out for a month, or if the because the car came from an auction and had a dummy key cut and was never coded. Not sure how to tell if the key is coded to the car or not? Here is the read after codes are cleared and the car is fired up for one second. Title: Re: 2005 S4 B6 Audi immobilizer or key issue. Post by: nyet on November 07, 2015, 11:05:48 AM Part it out or take it to qualified mechanic. That laundry list of codes is not indicative that anybody who worked on that car has a clue.
The immo is the least of your problems, if you can't work out how to get the immo working from the guides posted here. Title: Re: 2005 S4 B6 Audi immobilizer or key issue. Post by: nitrorocket on November 07, 2015, 02:08:16 PM Parting the car out is not an option, if anybody thinks they can diagnose the problems and help me fix these codes or at least track down what the problem could be I will pay them. My guess is that there is either a broken wire or is shorted out computer, or bad immobilizer, or I'm thinking the key is not coded to this car?
The key is not original and it looks like an aftermarket valet key. It also gives the code is 01176 "key signal too Low" I need to disable the immobilizer or find the SKC. For the one second that it fires up, it seems to run perfectly. Title: Re: 2005 S4 B6 Audi immobilizer or key issue. Post by: nyet on November 07, 2015, 03:33:32 PM For the one second that it fires up, it seems to run perfectly. Again, the 13 other codes indicate otherwise. Title: Re: 2005 S4 B6 Audi immobilizer or key issue. Post by: cerips on November 07, 2015, 04:31:11 PM My guess is that there is either a broken wire or is shorted out computer, or bad immobilizer, or I'm thinking the key is not coded to this car? There are several modules reporting they can't communicate with the immobiliser so I'd suggest you double check the connectors in the back are fitted properly for a start. Given the number of other faults I'd go through all the fuses and relays and then look at the wiring loom to check for damage. Title: Re: 2005 S4 B6 Audi immobilizer or key issue. Post by: nitrorocket on November 07, 2015, 11:10:18 PM I went out personally inspected everything I could and I don't see anything wrong with the wiring, I also checked every single fuse in the whole car and they are all good and all connections are in and tight.
I am at a loss, I need to figure out what's the majority of those 14 engine codes have in common, they must either have a common circuit or ground fault or control module or fuse that they run through. I wonder if the computer could be toast because my mechanic originally had the ground wires that go to the firewall connected to the intake manifold. Idk I wish I could bypass the immobilizer so that I could run the car for a while and see what goes on. I need to figure out if the immobilizer is tripped because the power was disconnected from the car so long as well is that ECU, or if the key for the car is incorrect. I have no idea, the engine was blown when I received the car and don't know the history... I removed the ECU and was going to attempt to maybe try to read it with my Ktag or something but I have to figure out how to hook up to what and where. Lol Title: Re: 2005 S4 B6 Audi immobilizer or key issue. Post by: vwaudiguy on November 07, 2015, 11:20:56 PM Do you have a wiring diagram for the car? Did you check the fuses with a test light rather than just doing a visual, and reseating? This is not a difficult issue to resolve in less than a half hour of electrical troubleshooting. When you have 10+ components report short to ground 9/10 times it means they a missing 12v+. Did you verify voltage at any of the components the ecu is listing as short to ground? Have you tried another ecu yet? No need to "wonder" about anything. Everything is easily tested in the car with minimal effort.
Title: Re: 2005 S4 B6 Audi immobilizer or key issue. Post by: nitrorocket on November 08, 2015, 05:34:24 AM I have checked every fuse with an ohm meter, I've been in the car biz a long time. I did find that the right can position sensor was worried incorrectly last night before I left. For whatever reason the 3 wires were cut and spliced with a new connector. The wiring was incorrect.
I have all the wiring diagrams. Its just hard for me, I have a tech that did the motor change for me, so I had to double check all his work, I found that he connected the firewall ground to the engine instead of the firewall. That fix didnt work, I hope the ECU is not damaged( I wonder if feeding it with Kess would verify any damage??) The car also arrived not running when I got it. So I don't know if it had this problem prior. It also came from an auction and has a new generic valet key that may have been cut, but not coded to the car for starting it. To many variables, this is a difficult car. Does anyone know how t verify if the immobilizer is not conmunicating with the ecu versus the key just not being coded? The "key signal low" code makes me wonder. Thanks guys!! Tgis is a challenging car from all these variables! Title: Re: 2005 S4 B6 Audi immobilizer or key issue. Post by: vwaudiguy on November 08, 2015, 10:55:52 AM Key signal low could be the ring in the steering column. I would say that is more likely if that were your ONLY problem. You should be able to turn the immo off in the ecu with out too much hassle to eliminate one possibility. Pick a component (say the N80) with the ign on car not running, do you have 12v positive at one of the pins? Look at your wiring diagram and find the group of components that all share a power feed. You need to verify you have 12v+ at the fuse, if not at the component connector. Using an ohmmeter isnt telling you much. The ecu also powers up relays, so if you find there is no voltage, find the relay it controls, and hardwire it closed. If the ecu is not closing these relays, either it does not have ign from the key, or the ecu is bad, or the ecu isn't properly grounded. I'm assuming you checked all these basic things @ the ecu connector already though, since you have a diagram and "checked everything".

I'm assuming you checked all these basic things @ the ecu connector already though, since you have a diagram and "checked everything". An ohmmeter will tell you everything you need to know if you're verifying a fuse, which is what you told him to do. If it has zero or negligible resistance, the fuse is fine. That said, with that many fault codes, there is something major wrong with the harness, or the ECU. I'd start by checking for a feed (12v) at the sensors. If you clear the faults, do they all reappear? I'd say that because the car is starting that the ECU isn't dead, but it has a serious issue somewhere. There is no way there is that many "short to plus" or "short to ground" in nearly every module. What comes back if you clear them? Title: Re: 2005 S4 B6 Audi immobilizer or key issue. If it has zero or negligible resistance, the fuse is fine. I assumed he was going to leave the fuses in the circuit, which might give you confusing resistances if using an ohm meter. Either way its moot at this point. In the time it's taken us to discuss it he could have pulled all the fuses and ohm'd them out of the fuse box. Not the way I would do it just saying. Title: Re: 2005 S4 B6 Audi immobilizer or key issue. Post by: nitrorocket on November 09, 2015, 04:51:45 PM I am going to try to attempt to delete Immobilizer on the 7.1.1 ECU so I can start the car.
I am trying to research the best way and it seems some use Kess in boot mode, or Ktag. For a newbie with both these tools, what would you recommend? I want to read the current flash, delete the Immo, and reflash the ECU. Also, am I best off trying Winols or trying ECM titanium to do this for the first time? Thanks for any pointers, some recommend Ktag bdm, but I'm having a little trouble finding a good guide how to hook what harness to what in the ECU. There are so many harnesses that came with my Ktag and Kess! Wish everything could be done through OBD! Lol Title: Re: 2005 S4 B6 Audi immobilizer or key issue. Post by: nitrorocket on November 09, 2015, 09:36:15 PM I will get into trying to program keys someday, but I have a hunch the car will not start because the key has never been coded. Tomorrow I am going to bring it to he dealer and have them code the key and see what happens. The immobilizer is locked, they key signal is to low, hopefully its locks because the low/no key signal.
The other codes are gone now, the short was the right cam position sensor wiring, someone had wired it wrong, after I switched the 3 wires around the codes went away. Crazy it was causing 14 codes. This car was such a mess when I got it, it really was ready for the junkyard. Lol I am also going to research what software would program the key for this car. I also need keys for my other Audis and Porsches so it would be a good investment. Title: Re: 2005 S4 B6 Audi immobilizer or key issue.
