Title: 2003 Audi a4 1.8T Quattro (CEL) Wiring Issue/Intake Sensor Temp too High
Post by: PLVSVLTRASPAIN on January 18, 2016, 06:18:05 PM
Hello,

I need some serious help here, my car has been throwing the following codes:

2 Faults Found:
16497 -  Intake Air Temp. Sensor (G42): Signal too High
        P0113 - 002 -  Lower Limit Exceeded
17701 -  Map Controlled Engine Cooling Thermostat (F265): Short to Plus
        P1293 - 001 -  Upper Limit Exceeded - Intermittent

Then 2 days after:

2 Faults Found:
16497 -  Intake Air Temp. Sensor (G42): Signal too High
        P0113 - 002 -  Lower Limit Exceeded
17700 -  Map Controlled Engine Cooling Thermostat (F265): Open Circuit
        P1292 - 004 -  No Signal/Communication

I cleaned the intake sensor but it still threw the code, i purchased a new sensor but the code still comes up.
The previous owner replaced the connector to this sensor, i'm just wondering if the wires are correct since it appears he just cut the wires in half.
Here's the configuration for the IAT 2 pin connector:

BK/RD-GR/BL
BK-GR/LTGR

If the cables are inverted (wrong) could this cause the CEL?

Now about the thermostat, will it need to be replaced? or did it just short it's sensor somewhere?
I read that the housing needs to be replaced, but i'm curious as to why the codes were different 2 days later.

-As i was replacing the IAT i noticed 2 wires (from the wire harness) close to were the gear box and engine connect were loose, looks like they ripped apart from a connector (please correct me if i'm wrong) see picture.

Wires are BR/RE and BR

Thank you very much in advance!

You have the sensor swapped. Thermostat plug is plugged into iat and iat is plugged into thermostat

Thank You for your reply sir. I will check first thing in the morning and will post results.

Did you get a chance to look at the picture? those 2 exposed wires are bothering me.

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH AGAIN!

Either find a wiring diagram or compare to a known good harness.

I found they belong to the VSS connector.
I will locate it's location tomorrow.

I couldn't wait and i went ahead and swapped the IAT and Thermostat connetors :)
That fixed the IAT code but now i have these 2 codes:

2 Faults Found:
17700 -  Map Controlled Engine Cooling Thermostat (F265): Open Circuit
        P1292 - 004 -  No Signal/Communication
17519 -  Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Regulation: Bank 1: System too Lean
        P1111 - 002 -  Lower Limit Exceeded

Thanks for all of your help!!

Your wires are cut in the thermostat wiring, the lean is a vacuum leak most likely

Still have this code, should i buy both o2 sensors?
Every time i erase the code the car stalls and almost turns off. then it's all good. it's bothering me.

How can i check for a vacuum leak?

Thanks

I'm not claiming to be a profession mechanic but when you state that when you delete the code your car almost stalls, sounds like your fuel trims are wack. Most likely cause could be vacuum leak, or faulty sensor. My guess is vacuum leak https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCBMc_l0y04
you could check fuel trims to verify.

Thank You Sir, my intake mani was broken (Vacuum Leak) No more CEL.
Ever since i swapped those plugs (Tstat to IAT) my car over heats to 3/4's and it drops to 1/2 every so often. Never at idle.
Sensors? What do you think?

Also, i tried to smog this morning but i failed the test. (see pic)
i followed http://www.audiworld.com/forums/s4-rs4-b5-platform-discussion-6/resetting-readiness-codes-using-vag-com-1477650/
to reset my readiness but i couldn't do it. My guess is bad o2 sensors. What do you think?
I never got a bad cat code.

Thanks in advance

Wait, did you set readiness before you went? Ask in drove the car till readiness failed or passed? Ross tech will help you find this out

I actually tried to reset the readiness using the link above but no luck.
I'm gonna try Ross-Tech.

In regards to the car heating up, i noticed my lower coolant hoses aren't hot at all.
What could this be? It heats up to 3/4's while driving but it goes down to 1/2.
Doesn't happen at idle. Water Pump was replaced a year ago.

Thanks in advance mate!

Not claiming I'm right but my best guess would be a thermostat. But your stating it drops down to the half way mark, makes me think A) your fans are kicking on B) you have an airpocket stuck most likely by the thermostat or last but not least you have something covering the radiator making it pourly transfer heat.
