Title: Can't get 24V VR6 (ME7.1.1) 022906032CS into boot mode
Post by: vwraceguy on April 07, 2010, 01:13:20 PM
Just got a Galletto 1260 and built a bench harness.  I'm using a regulated 13.8V supply
I just can't get it to go into boot mode.  I'm grounding pin 24 on the flash chip exactly as described here:

http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?269322-Tuning-your-Motronic-ECU-%28ME7.1%29 (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?269322-Tuning-your-Motronic-ECU-%28ME7.1%29)

and I get 'BOOT MODE INACTIVE'
Is there a possibility the pin for the k-line (43?) are different on this box?  I can't find a wiring diagram to confirm.
I know that communication to the cable is working because the light flashes when I try the non-boot mode (Audi VW 2.4,2.7,3.0, V6 /4.2 V8 ME 7.1.1 29F800BB).  But then it just sits and cycles forever

do you have ignition pin as well??Bosch me7.1 and 7.5 are all the same,I built a harness as well,But I havent tested it yet.My pinout for boschy me 7.5 is like this.Pins 1 and 2 are grounds.Doesnt matter if you switch them between each other. Pin 62 is battery power, pin 3 is your 15 power or ignition source, and 43 is your k line. I havent had the chance to test my set up hopefully tomorrow.Let me know if you have any other questions.Im learning this as well. But ive done some extensive readings. I ll try to help you as much as i can.I have spare me7.5 ecu i am using to test.to see if ill be able to read a bosch me7.1 for my car.

Only other thing you can try is the 29f400BB or the other one.

I was able to get it to do 'something' in non-boot mode, so I know my bench harness works now:
BENZINA
Audi VW 2.4, 2.7, 3.0, V6 / 4.2 V8  ME 7.1.1 AM29F800BB

.22906032C
MOTRONIC ME
0261207881
1037366374

but then I get:
errore Skl
Errore seed key

beware, there's a post on here with a bench diagram that is backwards
pin62 should be constant +12V power source
pin3 is switched ignition power.  I also hooked up pin 21 to switched power

But I still can't get into boot mode.  I checked my flash and it is 's' type which is 44 pin, and that puts the WE* pin at #47.  But all instruction point to grounding pin 24 which is DQ4? (data 4)
I've read that pin 3 of the serial eeprom also works, and that is the write protect pin.

Perhaps some implementations don't have boot mode?

Yeah Sorry.I just looked any my wiring diagram. You are right pin 62 is 30 power aka battery power and pin 3 in 15power of ignition on.I dont think you need pin 21.I havent had the chance to tyest my setup yet .Im not in a hurry but I hope to test it this sunday perhaps.

Ok I successfully Test my harness and It work. However I get a message that tells me to put a short to pin 24 which i do and let go right when i click ok and it read out the ecu numbers. Then when I go to read out the flash i hold the ground to pin 24 during the whole reading process.I have a file from a bosch me7.5 ecu.is it possible the whole file is only 512kb???

Nevermind I had the wrogn chip selected so it only read out half the file the file size is 1mb now.

I just tried that..  leaving the ground on the pin 24 during the read.  but I still get 'boot mode inactive'

which version of galletto do you have???Also I do mine like this.I turn on my power supply which is a regular 12v car battery at this point in time, hook up my bench harness to battery and the other end to obd2 connector for galletto and the respective pins on the ecu.I plug in the usb into my laptop. Then i ground pin 24 and hold in on pin 24 until i turn ignition on which is pin 3 on the ecu.after ignition is on for 2 or 3 seconds i take the ground off from pin 24. start galletto and hit ecu data. Then i get the message from galletto to GRound pin 24 so i ground it and hold it and when i hit enter on my laptop immeditaely after i take ground away from pin 24. it reads out the ecu numbers, sometimes yes sometimes no,then i do the same procedure except i hit read ecu and it reads out the file and ask you to save make sure you make your file <exmaple>.bin.Its best to save as a .bin.And thats it. if you have pics of your harness please post or send.

Its a Galletto 1260.  I just tried on my buddy's EDC15P  TDI, which is directly supported and it didn't work.  So I'm wondering if I got a crap cable.  It just says 'errore sending wake'

yeah that is wierd did you try removing pin21???completely.I only used pins 1,2,3 43,and 62 thats it.

yeah, I tried without pin 21 and it was the same.  Looks like I don't need it.
I know the ECU is working because I'm getting intrument cluster messages on the CAN line.

it says ME7.1.1 right on the cover

I believe galletto only  read and flashes me7.5 and me7.1.5 ecus not 7.1.1 but I could be mistaken.I believe there has to be a resistor soldered inline in order to enable boot mode on me7.1.1 ecus.

You can look up throuhg this page to find what you need to do to get it into boot mode.LEt me know if it help or part nubmer of the chipset or ecu would be helpful.

there was a jpeg in that link of a porsche 7.1.1 that looked idential and showed a jumper change to get testmode.
I tried that, but it didn't work.

I'm in!!!  so excited!

http://wiki.obdtuning.com/?title=Bild:AudiPorscheSeatSkodaVAGME7.jpg

needed a 2.2K resistor to pin 21
and 5K resistor to boot pin

also did the jumper thing from here:

currently downloading my bin file

Yes, its stock right now other than I might do a cat delete for space reasons.
Its a mid-engine MK1 Scirocco project:

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2636625&page=7

My main issue is getting the immobilizer disabled.  I won't be running the cluster at all.
I think it's a mod that needs to be done to the serial eeprom.

Glad To hear your project is coming along nicely.Galletto might not solve your immobilizer issue but its worht a shot i believe there is programming inside the ecu that sends out the request for the immobilizer code.Hoepfuly this thread will be of help to you.

Thanks for the link..
I ordered a eeprom burner similar to the one that guy used, so now I have some code changes to try.  At least if I mess up the Immo system I'll be able to revert it back to the original and try again.

They also have an adapter to program the chip without de-soldering and should make it alot easier/quicker.

pretty sweet. Yeah if i remember correctly you need to read out a separate eeprom and edit that memory. Looks pretty easy.

the eeprom burner came in and I was able to read and write to the serial eeprom without pulling it off the board:

now I just have to get the engine wired up to test it.

Not sure you will be able to read/write completely the serial eeprom without desoldering it.
Please report when you'll do your first test.

Was able to start the engine.. no cooling hooked up so didn't run it for more than 15-20 seconds.

There were some DTCs for junk I didn't have connected, and a code for missing CAN data from the cluster, but I didn't see any checksum errors.

The burner is a GQ-4x from mcumall.com

Kool glad to see it worked out for you.Cant wait to see if finished. Are you going to be running a stock cluster???or cluster from another vw chassis???
