Post by: crackerx on February 24, 2017, 12:59:45 AM
please you can helpme with a advice
about a mechanical problem on my 1.8t 224hp

from yesterday, when the engine is on load from 3 or 4gear for example
from 3000 to 4500 rpm
a clicking noise sound about 6-7 times per second
but on the neutral this sound not apear,if i rev the engine in neutral from idle to max this sound not appear
only on load and only from 3500 rpm when turbo make pressure >600mb

i put the car on elevator, rev with 6gear to 0kmh to 200kmh no sound
i rev the car on neutral from 1000 rpm to max 6000rpm no sound

Sounds like a transmission or power transfer problem?

When I think about it it could also be wastegate chatter, does the car stutter when this noise appears?

i do not understand what you mean "it could also be wastewater chatter"

but the car NOT stutter when this noise appears.acceleration is ok

Me7logger please :) and just a typical log, just make sure that it at least have wastegate duty cycle.

But I mostly think it's transmission related.

Could you describe the sound more precisely?

Is at full load or part throttle and is it always at the same RPM in all gears or just one gear?

Do you have a aftermarket DV?

DV is original

the sound is as "valve tapping" and appear only on engine load after 3000rpm to aprox 4500rpm , pronunced on 3th and 4th gear on load

another thing, probably important, is i rebulid my turbo 1000km ago with a original borg warner core and china aftermarket hotside of turbo with wastegate and actuator

Then i would think it is your wastegate actuator that is bad, but that would also translate into some weird engine behavior.

So a log would confirm or deny my assumption :)

Could be a cv joint is on the way out. That would only show under load. Most of the times this shows with sharp steering, but I have had cv joints click hard on acceleration before. Would be a speed dependant sound then, not rpm related.

I thought that too for some time too, but that would be a "constant" noise and get faster with more wheel speed, not only present within a RPM band :)

Can't really hear much, have you checked if anything is loose on the engine/exhaust?

when you mean "wastegate" you mean the Actuator or the internal turbo wastegate

i removed the hose from turbo actuator and i do some runs
turbo pressure grow very fast (i know is normally) but the clicking sound is the same

pls hear new record  http://vocaroo.com/i/s1qFAPfIJ7xX

In that audio clip it actually sounds to me like con rod chatter  :-\
But I'm not certain :)

Shure in not the conrod because i do almost 2000km with this sound and engine still ok

If is vvt chain why this sound appear only on boost pressure over 0.6bar and not appear if i rev engine to max in neutral

problem solved, the sound comes from upper turbo gasket

So the gasket manifold->turbo was leaking? :)

the gasket between exhaust manifold and turbo..so strange no power loss all was OK but that sound make me crazy several weeks

Yeah there's pretty high pressure in the manifold when you're on boost :)
It just have to be a needle sized hole to be audible.

Very true.  My jetta with an F21 and highflow mani would make a "pew pew pew" sound at full boost until I got locking tabs for the manifold bolts to keep them from backing out.   Even now, I'll hear it every once in a while.
