Title: After flash ECU info is "THIS-IS-THE-RAM-PROGRAM"
Post by: Matt Danger on March 01, 2011, 09:00:41 PM
Hi all, forgive me if this is a simple problem. I tried to search around but didn't come up with much.

I've tried flashing a few different files using Tony's software. Some stock, some modified. Slow init with the two rate options. After each flash the ECU info will report "THIS-IS-THE-RAM-PROGRAM". Both with Tony's software and Vag-Com. The car will not start (spare ECU so I'm not stranded).

This post (http://www.nefariousmotorsports.com/forum/index.php?topic=344.msg2132#msg2132) suggests that this will happen when the ECU is still in a programming session. However, Tony's flashing tool completes the flash successfully and I choose to disconnect when I'm done.

This post (http://www.nefariousmotorsports.com/forum/index.php?topic=145.msg628#msg628) suggests that this message means the ECU is in a fail safe mode. If this is the case I guess my question is what do I need to do to prevent this problem?

Am I missing something simple? I can flash using Galleto in boot mode but I'd rather use Tony's flasher  :)

I've attached the log file, if it can be of any use.

THIS-IS-THE-RAM-PROGRAM means the ECU is in programming mode and running out of code loaded into RAM.

Turning the ignition off should cause the ECU to exit programming mode. If the ECU believes the code programmed to the flash is bad, then it won't exit programming mode when the ignition is turned off.

PS: Log files look fine. When you were using version 1.6.1.0 you had some communication errors. Now that you are using version 1.7.0.0 you don't have any communication errors.

Write it on the bench and try if car starts.

How do you get around getting the ecu to exit the programming?

Had this also one time after forgotten to turn off ignition after flashing.
Turning it off and on again and ecu was working as expected.

I can't make head or tail of this question :/

This is partly sorted now, the .bin is at fault as the 2 other files I have go on fine

8N0906018 APY ecu comes with soldered 29F400BT

I was able to read it while in the car.
It failed writing at around 40% with "general error" in the car with mpps.
It failed writing at around 40% with "general error" on the bench.
I desoldered one resistor (the one with the red dot) and tried to write different times...
It failed different times in bootmode with "programming error" before 100%.
It failed different times on the bench with "general error" before 100%.
There is no propt to turn ignition off after writing.

Right now ecu is in the ram program. Should i try to write flash outside of the ecu?
Does this ecu come with different resistor configurations?

The ECU is supposed to have a 29F400BB, not a BT.
Of course the CBOOT can never write the ECU if there is a BT in there, as the memory layout is wrong.

Fit the correct chip and your problem is solved.
