Title: 1988 Mustang 2.7t swap(photo heavy)
Post by: Pwndbymustang on October 23, 2014, 11:40:34 AM
Hey my name is Brandon and I posted this in vwvortex a while ago but just started playing with nefmoto software and thought i should post this here too so people know what im working with. Anyways for a few years now I've been contemplating taking the 2.3 turbo motor out of my 1988 mustang and throwing the whole drivetrain from an a6 or s4 in. My buddy does car salvaging and he ended up with a 2.7t a6 automatic and i paid $800 to basically gut whatever i want out of it and give him the shell after. So anyways this is where I started.(http://[IMG]http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b609/BiturboMustang/3825_zps74b3f2f7.jpg)[/IMG](http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b609/BiturboMustang/4326_zpse66ba31c.jpg) (http://s1294.photobucket.com/user/BiturboMustang/media/4326_zpse66ba31c.jpg.html)(http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b609/BiturboMustang/4315_zpsffff1381.jpg) (http://s1294.photobucket.com/user/BiturboMustang/media/4315_zpsffff1381.jpg.html)
So before i started on the actual swap I needed a new garage sooooo

and now time for the track, but found out on the freeway that my alignment isnt that great and i might need to re-balance 1 wheel but i wasnt going to let that stuff ruin my day so i said screw it im still running! It was also super busy at Great Lakes Dragaway that day for being a Sunday so i was only able to get in 2 passes. First one is the one i got down here and it was no launch, one front o2 sensor had no signal(still trying to find break in wire) and 7 psi(boost leak which i found 2 days after) Knowing that this drivetrain in the a6 its from would have ran a 15.7 stock and even with me having all these issues i dont think it went to bad. Nothing broke and it doesnt feel like it was really trying so i consider it a success :)
(http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b609/BiturboMustang/th_foxbaudi1stpass_zps3ca8962e.mp4) (http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b609/BiturboMustang/foxbaudi1stpass_zps3ca8962e.mp4)
after that i figured out one of my front springs was broken and it was one reason it felt weird on bumps so now im putting in my brothers stock gti springs :P
(http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b609/BiturboMustang/654_zpse6bfb5eb.jpg) (http://s1294.photobucket.com/user/BiturboMustang/media/654_zpse6bfb5eb.jpg.html)
heres my more recent video of the jfonz ecu in with still no extra boost
http://youtu.be/S7HBC8y1rJo
So right now i gotta get my alignment dead on and try to figure out my boost issues.
I have the stock ecu that im trying to figure out how to tune(flashed over to Lbox) and a jfonz stage 2(apparently) but when i read it i cant tell much difference if any besides that its a hitachi MAF(i swapped over) and the other is a bosch and they both are basically the same with boost. So if anyone has a bin that is up to like 20 psi or something like that on a basically stock setup id love to look at it to c where im going wrong and to test to c if its a boost leak or the tune. Thanks for looking :P

Awesome build, love the dog  ;D

Check out the 2.7t community project for some guidance on the tune, no-one here will just hand out a map, but they'll help you create your own.

Thanks! I thought it would be a fun project, and there's a good chance of getting a shop in the next few weeks and I'll really be able to go to town on this ugly thing lol but I read thru the community project turboat suggested and I have a waaaaayyy better understanding of the pure basics now and i just tested a tune with just slightly more boost and I'm seeing 10psi on the gauge(crap gauge) but i want to up the boost a lil more to make it to the track tomorrow or Sunday to go for 13's at least lol

Now im getting ready for my rear GT3071r setup since im sure the track won b open much longer this yea. For this setup i just need an oil scavenge pump and i should have almost everything needed to start the build minus some aluminum and steel piping. I cant wait to get the engine bay cleaned up and 90% of the random vac hoses and intake piping out of there.

Im only going for 400whp and I know that turbo can do that, plus I'm going to have the car a few hundred pounds lighter by next season.

Its coming along, the exhaust and such im going to be finishing welding and painting today or tomorrow and then i can throw that stuff in for good then its a bunch of lil stuff like finishing the fuel and oil lines and then to get her running and then it will b time to play with the tune. the track opens on the 28th so I'm putting a bunch of time in on her to get ready. Hoping i can figure out the last bit of fittings and such that i need so i can bolt it all up and try to start it next weekend if im lucky.

its been a while but heres an update on where im at ;)

6 Speed is bolted in....mostly.
The only reason the 01e is in is because the tiptronic started slipping at like 16psi and i said f^#k it to that thing and just bought all the remaining parts to get this bi#*h done.
Rebuilt using a full JHM kit

(http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b609/BiturboMustang/FoxbAudi/2E18FC5C-4191-42C1-837A-D764735607EA_zpsnujasoo6.jpg) (http://s1294.photobucket.com/user/BiturboMustang/media/FoxbAudi/2E18FC5C-4191-42C1-837A-D764735607EA_zpsnujasoo6.jpg.html)

Wiring is getting organized finally and there now wont really b a dash lol

(http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b609/BiturboMustang/FoxbAudi/6FDB43D1-CA31-4507-8339-68360FE0F2B7_zpsdlhzxond.jpg) (http://s1294.photobucket.com/user/BiturboMustang/media/FoxbAudi/6FDB43D1-CA31-4507-8339-68360FE0F2B7_zpsdlhzxond.jpg.html)

Only downside the the manual tranny is that my intake hits the shift linkage so i guess im removing the passenger seat today and working on running the intake thru the cabin along with the air-to-water intercooler drag car style :P It will all b 3" and as straight as i can run it from the turbo. Also it will b a blow thru hitachi maf setup but will b going to the PMAS HPX once i find $200 for it lol

Cool, nice work! Though I would say put the maf sensor right at the firewall, because you would benefit from more stable measurable airflow. What is that panel with all them switches for?  ;D looks cool yeah, like an airplane.
Good to see you are using a L/A intercooler, I'm investigating them too because of my non existent airflow at the IC's in the rear. When using a good sized front mounted radiator, I bet you will see very low intake temperatures!

Good call on ditching that piece of shit tip tranny.... literally the weakest piece of the 2.7t drivetrain, by far.

Title: Re: 1988 Mustang 2.7t swap(photo heavy)
Post by: Pwndbymustang on October 04, 2015, 11:43:06 AM
The MAF will eventually be located in a different spot and yea i know its not an ideal spot. The switches are for all the lights and oil scavenge pump and such since i re-wired pretty much everything on the car besides the tail lights.
The tip was nice while it was around stock boost but it was time to go to manual because i want 11's b4 the track closes in the beginning of November and the tip i dont think would be up for the task after trying to throw 16-20 psi at it lol
Just drove it yesterday since the tranny swap and it feels good so far. I will be logging today since i got my wideband and other gauges in so i can actually give it some throttle.

Title: Re: 1988 Mustang 2.7t swap(photo heavy)
Post by: Pwndbymustang on October 04, 2015, 02:16:45 PM
Well i took it for a drive and it felt really good for basically stock ko3 tune, only went a bit on throttle and saw about 4psi at 2900 rpm which is 1000 rpm sooner then the last setup with the tip and gt3071r.
I'm going through the logs now so i can change the boost curve and such. So im pretty excited at the moment lol

Title: update - 3D printed alignment
Post by: Pwndbymustang on February 04, 2016, 03:10:37 AM
I'm working at getting all my annoying leaks dealt with(hate this stuff) and its supposed to snow a good amount soon so I hope I can get some footage of this thing frolicking in the snow :P

My last drive with this was super rich, about 9.9:1 afr at idle(didn't have time to change fueling in the tune) but it was still very responsive which seems odd to me but I'll take it. I will be leaning it out today, and hopefully using my 3D printed laser alignment tools to get this thing nice and straight. Last time this was at the track it was a death trap with how bad the alignment.

Here's how I tested my 3D printed pieces on my Audi just to see how it worked(btw it worked really well)

Awesome idea! Do you have the cad or stl files for these parts? Looks super neat :-)

Well I decided to add another variable into the mix :P so 2.0 coils are in and it's running. Just gotta adjust the tune for the new dwell settings and to get the air/fuel a little closer.

So I should b doing more testing soon and I also got my season pass for the track which opens in less then a month ;) videos will b coming as I take them!

FYI, pin 4 on the late model connectors is supposed to be a chassis ground, independent of the harness ground that pin2 goes to....  Run pin 4 on all the coils for that bank to a common ring connector and ground it to one of the accessible center valve cover studs, simple enough.

Hmmm....ill try that, can never have too many grounds lol in all the wiring diagrams I see that they both go together.

Yeah, people were doing it that way for a while and then some noticed misfire issues from it.  Revised info here:

Oops, senior moment.  That should have said Pin 2 to chassis, pin 4 to harness  :-[

Sorry for reviving this old thread but this is just wild. Great job making it go what a tremendous amount of work!  Howd those 3d printed alignment plates workout? Did you ever get this finished or still a work in progress? Just too dang neat to not comment sorry for the resurrection again.

I have been considering buying a 3d printer. The design quality it up to the creator, but how is the quality/strength of the material? I think myth busters needs to do a strength test.

Very vehicular interracial and ingenious!
