Credit to someone on this forum not me. But this has saved me numerous times and I haven't seen it on the stickies.

Unplug your battery and let the ECU  sit for a few minutes. Then you will get one good working try to reflash the ECU before it goes back to nogood condition. 

If you accidentally forgot to checksum a file or some other error makes your recently flashed bin no good.  Then try this method to restore.

I can confirm, it works. Sometimes needed to leave car with unpluged battery more than few minutes, but yes, it's more easier than remove ecu for bootmode
