I have a 2002 New Beetle 1.8T (ME7.5 06A906032A / Bosch 0261206507). Original ECU is bad - gives crank sensor code. Verified sensor and wiring are good. I have a matching donor ECU - it does not throw the same code, but of course there is the IMMO issue.

As I understand it I need to use channel 50 adaptation to adapt the ECU to the cluster. I have both original and donor cluster SKCs (05108 and 01056). KW1281Test extracted both from the clusters. I tried my old VAG-COM 409.1 and the "Login" for the donor ECU module does not accept the SKC from the donor cluster. The cluster does accept it. Am I correct to assume that the donor ECU SKC doesn't match the cluster? Or is that not relevant?

Anyway, what is my next step?

read the original ECUs EEPROM file then write that original EEPROM file to the donor ECU (benchmode required for flashing to EEPROM). Alternatively, you could read the donor EEPROM, edit it (or turn immobilizer off) using one of the available EEPROM tools;

or else just edit the donor EEPROM file directly using a hex editor to change the SKC and any other data you might want changed (soft coding, VIN, immobilizer ID), checksum correct and then flash back to the donor EEPROM (in benchmode).

Thanks grayjay.

I was not able to get it to read the EEPROM in boot mode (if I even was able to get it in to boot mode?) with any of my cables.

I bought a CH341a, did the 3.3v mod, and attempted that route. I was able to read both EEPROMs.

The donor ECU one from the junkyard is weird with 65535 SKC, XXXX* vins.

I backed both up and tried flashing the donor ECU with original ECU's bin. All appears to be well, but when trying it in the car, I still get the blinking IMMO light.

Back on the bench, reading the chip again CH341a, it has reverted to the weird 65535/XXXX state.

Any thoughts?

The IMMO2 bit got me thinking so I went and grabbed the lids - the original is a GA rev and the donor is an A rev - I'm assuming that's the issue. I went back to the yard and it turns out that the donor was a 2000 and not a 2002 like it was catalogged as. I've ordered another GA.
