Sorry for this to be a first post but I was sent here to see if I can get some information.

I have a 2003 VW R32.

I am wanting to use a FIS controller from http://www.zzottel.de/index_en.html

I have been in contact with the chap there and he asked me to check my ECU to see what protocol the engine module my ECU uses.

My ECU uses KWP2000 but for the controller to work it has to use KWP1281.

I have no knowledge on ECU's and this is probably a stupid question but is it possible to change the protocol?

If it's not possibly which I suspect is the case is there any ECU that I can use

I'd say yes, it will work.

I'm pretty sure both 1281 and 2000 are used. When I log into the ECU with VCDS it uses 1281. When I log into the ECU using Nefmoto or an ELM327, It logs in with 2000. This is on my ME7.5 1.8T ECU. I think yours will do it the same way.

When I log into say the instruments it does use KW1281 but the chap who makes the controller told me to check the engine module and that uses KWP2000.

I was wondering if the engine module can be changed to use KW1281?

I don't have car with me to get some screen shots...will be the end of the week before I see it again as working away.

I have been told any bosch me7.1.1 32mhz ecu will work in my car I would need to get my immo and map put on to it...mine has a custom map on it from HGP.

I have no idea about ECU's.

Do the protocols the ECU uses come on the ECU or do they come on the mapping?

I would like to know this too.

I have a D-DOT CAN based module to read measuring blocks but it cannot access the Engine ECU.

The guy who supplied it is quite willing to rewrite the software if we can find the KWP2000 protocols.

There is a whole section devoted to ECU protocols on this forum, including KWP1281 and 2000. 98% of your questions will be answered there most likely.

My problem is I don't know what I am looking for as a answer...I have tried looking but I just get lost with it all....which is why I asked the questions.

I do apologise for it but car electronics are just like a foreign language to me.
