I've downloaded my ecu bin file from my S3, and want to open it up now to have a look. What software is good for this for free?

Download a demo of WinOLS or use TunerPro.

WinOLS says it cant be opened because its already modified?

Tunerpro doesn't have a definition file for my car, or one similar.

Sounds like the file has a NOREAD tag somewhere and will not open in WinOLS for that reason. You can delete that in a simple hex editor and FF the NOREAD tag in order to delete it.

But in either tool you will need a definition file / map pack / XDF. There are quite a few available in the forums here.
