Hi,

lets say you build a mk1 golf 1.8t conversion with original cluster and speedo cable/shaft.
gearbox has no electrical sensor like the mk4 and later on.

does the ecu calculate the speed via gangi and nmot or is the gangi a calculated result from speedsensor, nmot, load.

its "The chicken or the egg problem/dilemma"

i dont own such car so i cant check the meassurement block for speed.
i just asking out of interest Smiley

ecu calculates gangi from nmot & speed

speed signal comes from the cluster

ECU calculates gear (gangi) from speedo and rpm (nmot). There is at least one company I know of that makes a mechanical to digital conversion for swaps such as these. It's much easier to also swap in the cluster that matches the engine management system. It's also a good idea to swap the trans as well as nothing that came in mk1/2's can deal with much TQ without changing the internals.

okay thank you guys.

are there any downsides of having no speed signal at the me7.5 ecu.

is the speed (-> and gangi) needed for important tasks?

i mean there are hundreds of 1.8t swaps driving around and no one reported something.

No cruise control for one, and If you're using the OE cluster the fuel gauge will reflect the sloshing in the tank, that's all I can think of off the top.

I'm not familiar with the mk1, but on mk2 mfa clusters there is a speed signal output on the back of the cluster which you can use for the ecu.

Dont have any info to hand, but Ive done this when building mk2 20v's and the ECUs havent bitched about lack of speed signal (many many other things, sure).

Googling found a bunch of info, including this from rubjonny on clubgti, I cannot confirm this, but he is usually right:

you'll need the speed signal for the ecu, to do this in a mk1 you'll need an MFA cluster and add a wire into the smaller plug on back of the dash:
T6
1 - wht/blu - outside air temp sensor
2 - wht/red - outside air temp sensor
3 - grn/blk - Fusebox pin B/15 on early models, spade to engine loom behind fusebox on late models (oil temp sensor)
4 - blk/yel - Fusebox pin A/3 (Gearshift control relay pin 3/L)
5 - wht/grn - Fusebox pin B/18 (Gearshift control relay pin 5/G)
6 - wht/yel - speedo signal

you may be able to add the speed sender to your existing clocks, its screwed into the back of the speedo on the MFA cluster and the mk2 golf unit will fit the mk1 speedo. then you'll probably have to find the 6 pin plug housing and screw it into the back of the cluster with the pcb section inserted, assuming this is there on the non-mfa clocks?
