So i have A6 C5 from 1997, one of the first, straight from germany,  its a cable throttle variant so its probably ME3.8, right? Anyway, i was hoping to read SKC from somewhere(either ECU or cluster), since i only have one pair of keys and i want to program IMMO for the other set. I have 2 cables, one is some random FT232R OBD generic cable and also i have Vag k+can 1.4 (FT232R also). I also had a FT232BM blue cable KKL cable that i gave to my sister. I've tried them all, i can't connect via Vag commander(1.4-2.5) no matter what i do, i try to open up a K-line connection but it is unable to identify/connect. What i am able to connect with is the very old VWTool program, which works like a charm but i can't read SKC with it. I've tried other programs like EEPRom reader etc to pull my cluster info but they don't work either. So what should i do, should i try vagtacho? I downloaded the Vagtacho EPT and versions 1.1-1.5 from this forum but i've noticed that they use EPT for RT245 etc, which i don't have.
Also the connection with VWTool isn't that stable sometimes, it seems to reconnect sometimes, maybe something to do with baudrate(but shouldn't that be decided automatically, since its serial connection?).
I'm open to suggestions.

Ok from my experience.
Recently I retrieved a code from 2003 A4 convertible, using vag commander 2.5. But that was a struggle.
First
look for a "tester" config file. Open it with text editor and look if under COM you have the com number that use cable using.
Second
My expirience to use k-line with vag commander only worked with original rosstech cable. Had to install old drivers that were supporting VPC if I'm not mistaking. For some reason to use vag commander with my 2005 A6 I have to use cheap cable in TP 2.0 , original Ross won't connect thru TP 2.0 or K-line and I don't know why
Anyway look at the setting in the tester file I would start there
