Hi,

i opened up a med9.1 s3 8p ecu the other day and read it by bdm.
after this i sealed it and customer took it back into car.

Battery was not connected, he puts ecu back in, attached battery which is at 12,5x and car only cranks but dont start.
No VCDS yet, dash looks normal according to him.

Is there a way to break the board when ripping of the ecu cover from the grey thermal glue?

It's unlikely to damage when peeling the glue. If you used something to pry it open then you may have damaged one of the SMD components. Does your customer have VCDS or any diagnostic tool to see if they can ID the ECU? Do the radiator fans kick in while on ignition 2?

I'd get the ECU back and see if it still works on the bench. If so, it's a case of having a scout with a magnifying glass to see what you've knocked while on BDM.

If you don`t remove the power of the Bdm unit you are using you can easily burn the cpu by accidentally touching the bdm pins somewhere around the pad while you remove it.

What device did you used for reading?

In any case med9.1 ecus are cheap(+-150 e) and since you made a full backup you can clone it.

I was going to say the same, I would make another ecu.
All med9 2.0tfsi ecus are the same from what I understand and I buy them off ebay
with connectors for 60 bucks.

I opened one a month ago and screwed up a driver, someone here was nice enough
to send me the driver I broke, but lessoned learned that day I have spares on hand now.
Even have a Immo off ecu so I can move cars if I have the ecu out.

Thanks for you answers

I used Galletto2 with ignition switch but i cannot remember if it prompted me to switch ignition off at the end of the read before i lifted the bdm head.
Are they all the same? Or should the bosch numbers match?

So the story continued in the meantime. Car starts after many trys and after many ignition off/on you have access to the ecu with vcds. So i told him to look for corroded pins, connector issues and so on.

Are there cold soldering point on theses ecus? A fried told me some of the TTRS have problems with this and he used to bake the ecu in the oven to fix this Roll Eyes
What i dont understand: where is the connection between removing, heating with a hair dryer (not that hot), bmd read, sealing AND the cold soldering points. 

I mean, if i fuc*d something up when ripping the cover of the ecu would be dead 100%.... strange

All 2.0tfsi are the same, a4, gti, jetta, Passat, EOS, A3, ect.
I would guess there is a bad connection, Sounds like someone needs
vagcom to figure out what codes are there.

If it has connection to vcds there are zero dtcs and car starts.

Sounds like its not booting every time, i dont know.

Okay so i cloned the ecu and the new one works flawlessly.

I found the problem on the old one  Roll Eyes

none of those traces look broken. id keep poking around, or maybe its just a fluke.

I think I see the problem, it looks like someone used a cutting wheel on the ecu.
I want to know what happened as much i'm afraid to find out.

wait, i do see the 1 trace cut. that could easily be repaired.
