Hello, mates.

I am currently trying to convert my big turbo Z20LET Speedster to ME7.5 wideband ecu, to take full advantage of it.

I've seen this done few times in Greece, unfortunately not so many infos about this, so I must figure out how to do this properly.

We have the following issues:

- the trigger offset, which is different from VAG 1.8T to Opel - In Greece I've seen this fixed by drilling new hole in Z20LET engine block and placing the sensor in similar position to 1.8T - I personally dislike this idea, I think it can weaken the engine block, so I will modify the trigger wheel so the offset will be similar as it is in 1.8T ( in 1.8T we have 16teeth counting from 1st missing tooth of 60-2 wheel, in 2.0 Opel we have 22teeth ) - so basically we must turn the trigger wheel in relation to the crankshaft - it can be done

- the camshaft sensor + trigger wheel - no solution so far, we'll analyze this in the end

- tacho - no problem here

- coolant temp indicator - no issue here, we will use original Z20LET coolant temp sensor, I think the signal originally splits between Me1.5.5 ecu and instrument panel, so both use same signal.

- clutch switch, brake switch and pedal - no issue here

- speed input signal - there is analogic signal coming from ABS unit, we'll add a signal converter if it's not plausible with Me7 VSS signal.

We will use original 1.8T BAM loom, immo off on engine ECU, the rest of 1.8T original sensors, so there are other several issues, but all can be fixed, apart from the camshaft sensor issue.

I think the options are :

1. to run with no camshaft sensor, which means probably limp mode, and I really don't know how will the ECU behave even if we delete the camshaft sensor DTC's.

2. to try and mechanically adapt the 1.8T trigger wheel + camshaft sensor to Z20LET camshaft - which is almost impossible as the Z20LET has both camshaft sprockets linked via the timing belt, it's not like in 1.8T. More than this, the Z20LET intake and exhaust are on opposite sides compared to 1.8T.

3. to try and develop a signal emulator which will pick up the signal from crankshaft sensor and will emulate a camshaft sensor signal, resulting in a perfect emulated phasing, so we will never know if real phasing is ok or not.

4. to use the actual Me1.5.5 sensor + actual Z20LET camshaft trigger ( the actual intake camshaft sprocket ) with Me7.5 ecu - I don't know how this can be done, if it can be done. The Z20LET cam trigger has 180degrees filled/180 degrees empty circular setup, while the 1.8T cam trigger has 4 different teeth, 2 are larger, 2 are smaller. So probably signal pattern is totally different...or not...I did not have the chance to visualise it via an oscilloscope...

Please feel free to add your opinion. Can we run "at full power" the ME7 with no camshaft sensor (option 1)? Can option 4 be really implemented/changed in ME7 logics originally designed for 1.8T?

This is an example of this conversion done, for those of you which are familiar with Z20LET engine, you can see the original camshaft sensor connector coming out if its original place.
