How important is the VSS?

Working on a b6 2.7t swap.
On the b6, looks like the ECU and cluster get the speed from the abs module via the can bus.
The b5 ecu gets speed from the cluster which comes from the VSS in the tranny.
Not sure how to get b6 speed to b5 ecu.
