I see that there is a forum for other cables that work, so am naturally wondering if I can save some money and use one of those. Will that cable work with the VCDS system, and for coding?
Compared to the value of the car you bought and the costs for the transmission you saved i would go all in, really.
Even if the cable and license are a bit expensive, its nothing compared to what you can save.

Deleting faultcodes alone can cost you 30€-100€ at a free workshop / official dealer here in Austria.
Support the guys at rosstech i would say.
Also dealers simply are not allowed to code everything you want to be coded.

Will it work to do all the things in the video you linked, if I follow the steps?
I am not a VAG-Guy, more into italian cars and the video was only an example how coding works,
but yes with a bit of legwork on google you can do a lot of stuff on VAG cars with VCDS.
