I have a working VAG-Tacho, that reads and writes my 2002 MKIV GTI, never been able to get it to read the 2003 A4 though.  Think you're up against a newer system in the B6 gen A4's.  It is a small amount of data that comes from the read along the lines of the ECU eeprom.  Only been able to do mileage and mods to dash lights.

Seems no progress in this?
I had some hope to get the firmware in the instrument cluster disassembled in order to add 1-2 menu items in the MFA, some information which is available on CAN bus already.

additionally the MFA stick could be used to switch some maps with ECU mods instead of the CC stick, which not every one has installed
