This is a very noobish question I realise, but I am new to this forum!
I have a 2009 model Auid TT RS manual in standard, unmodified spec., and would like to download the ECU map in a binary, and then study it, with a view to modifying perhaps and re-flashing later.
The car used an MED9.1 ECU, and I believe since the build date was June 2009, will not have any encryption protection.
I already have a VCDS cable, which I believe will suffice for this purpose.
My question is, what software do I need to download the map from the ECU via the OBD-II port, and subsequently view/edit it?
Many thanks in advance

Ok, thanks. What cable and software would you recommend? Is this the sort of thing I should be looking for: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221212761650Or is that just a cheap imitiation of what I really need?

Yes, that's a cheap clone, but it should work for your purposes. Consider getting a BDM so you can make a full backup of the flash and e2p prior to any work.

TT RS is bad news for "studying with a view to modifying perhaps reflashing later".

MPPS clones should be okay. The never v16 should be good (better than the older clones, where the quality could vary) according to a couple of guys at DigitalKaos.
I myself have been using a MPPS v12 clone to read/write MED9.1 successfully (not my own maps).

TTRS/RS3 is not "normal" med9.x, you will need bdm to get around tuner protection.
Good luck tuning this, you have a hard road ahead.

Thanks guys for all the good advice here thusfar - some really good tips.
With regard to Tuner Protection, I am given to understand that this was not released on the TT RS until about September 2009. The first few cars did produced did not have this feature, and were flashable via OBD2. Later models are as suggested, only tunable via ECU removal and bench-flashing.
My car was built in June 2009, so I may be just slightly in advance of this cut-over data and still capable of read/write via. OBD2.
In any case, the best MPPS clone I can find on Ebay is ver 13. I've ordered it and will update this post again when I've managed to read (and post up) the ECU file.

Clone tools are going to get you no where with this.
This is NOT the ECU to start learning motronic with, It will fast become a paper weight.
Even the "Best" tuner in the VAG world cant do it.
