Is the answer really to give up and buy a different setup?

You are going to want a bootmode capable set up no matter what.

Not always but usually. It is not a tragedy. Also, not in all, but in most cases you can just repeat write and get you brick alive. Especially in boot mode.

If you're doing this with the ecu installed in the car, try putting a charger on it. Say 2-5A. I've had cars that were difficult to read, get much more stable with slightly higher voltage. Going too high seemed to make things worse. YMMV of course, but this works for me on occasion.

Car has a good newer optima in it but I have a charger specificly made for programming cars so that is easy enough to hook up. I'll give that a shot tonight. After connecting I turned the speed down to 34k should I go lower maybe? It failed at both full speed and 34k at 4%.

Not many people doing NA4.2 xdfs since tuning them doesn't really yield any worthwhile gains.
Pointless motor, imo

10400 kbs and switched connection address to functional. had charger on it. failed a few times. persistence mostly. And as far as no gains and worthless motor what is your malfunction? i need to change some settings in the ecu to get it to behave the way i want. it makes 300hp im not looking for more power.
