Hi all,

Im new to this forum, I like cars and I like electronics and as such I would like to understand modern vehicle electronics a little better.

I dont actually need another car and as such id want to spend as little as possible.

What would be the best entry vehicle to purchase for learning tuning?

I know i could buy ECU`s to work on a bench with ,but i think without a car to run it in it would not be as enjoyable.

any ideas?

p.s im in the UK.

I would recommend the VAG 1.8T engine from 2000 to 2005. Older than 2000 doesn't support OBD flashing, and newer than 2005 is no longer ME7 which makes flashing more complicated.

In the UK you can pick up an 02 Leon Cupra for peanuts. You'll need to be able to insure it though!

yes insurance is hurting me already as I run two cars , however these are older Merc w124`s.

You have good taste. I want a W123 but have no need for a second car and have nowhere to store it.  Cry

Everyone on this forum will steer you towards VAG products, but what about older Fords, e.g. Sierra Sapphire Cosworth (have you seen Wheeler Dealers with Mike Brewer and Edd China?) or those grey import Nissan Sunnys with 4x4 & turbo 16V engines, ditto grey import Toyota MR2 turbos? I always admire these if I see them about. Should be ultra reliable and have big support on the forums, etc. The ECU code might be more accessible? I don't know.

Failing that, you can't go wrong with Golf, Jetta or Audi A4 1.8T.

Seat Leon Cupra`s can be had for as little as 1k. they seem to be the cheapest VAG 1.8T of that gen. This seems the way to go as it will expose me to the world of OBD, CAN comm , ecu tuning and with the wealth of info on this forum, tax and insurance is the only thing putting me off.

TTQS all those great alternative cars you suggested made me think, my w124 estate was modified by a UK firm called Turbo Technics back in 93. It uses the standard ECU and piggy back controller for the additional injectors. Maybe I should be spending time analyzing my own ECU`s eeprom, and getting a new modern tuneable additional injector controller . Im pretty sure my ECU does not control fueling. Huh

The price of petrol is killing me. Around £50 pw is the average. Still, it's worth it for the grins.
