Starting to accumulate some parts for my big turbo build. I'm hoping I can get some good advice from the experts here.

I'm looking for around 500Bhp

Is it worth the extra money for a DBB Turbo, I'm thinking a gt30 would be ideal.
I've decided on one with an internal gate. Will this cause problems if I have to clock the turbo? I've seen on some videos where they have to re-drill the locator for the wastegate.
Do I need to up-rate my valve springs?
I've just bought a brand new maf. Genuine, cost me around £120. Will this still work or do I have to go bigger? And can you buy just the S3 housing without the element?

I'll probably add to this, but these are my main concerns right now. Thank you in advance.

You'll need springs and won't do 500 on a stock 3" MAF, let alone a stock AUQ one.

Thanks for the speedy reply. Would I be better off looking into a gt28?
I know I'm looking for 500 bhp.
But maybe shooting for 350-400 with a GT28 would be a better idea.
If I'm going to need valve springs, even larger maf/mafless and don't plan on spending on an lsd.
I've also heard that the GT30 is a bit laggy on a 1.8t, even the DBB ones.
Thoughts?

I'm just trying to figure out my options to be honest.

Everyone seems to rave about the GT28, but people are making similar power with Hybrid k04's and k04-024's for a lot less money.
Some people say that putting my maf in a 3" s3 housing is good enough, others say it isn't, and others again say go mafless.

At first I was debating a k03s Hybrid, with the 225 injectors, so I can just copy the maps over myself. Then I thought it was a lot of money for say 30-40 bhp, and figured maybe k04 hybrid is a better option as I still need to do intake piping when I fit a front mount. I already have a 3" downpipe, but they do a 90 adaptor for it if I decide to go k04.

This all sounds very noobish.
Start with a xls sheet and add all the parts with prices you think you need.
Start reading S3 Big Turbo Build Threads on audi-sport.net or what ever is best board for this kind of builds in your country.

Sum it all up and think about it some days... can is do thins in my parking low with all the rain and snow  Roll Eyes

Well that's why I'm asking here because all I seem to get is mixed results when looking through different forums and threads. It's like youtube comments. More people arguing about how your "figures are wrong" and "you wont make those figures from this turbo" etc.

Sorry if it sounds noobie but I thought that's what "Noob questions" was for. And that there are no wrong questions only wrong answers?

Basically I've maxed out my k03s and my current setup. And I'm trying to find out what would be the best bang for buck turbo upgrade while still having a drive able car that spools before it runs out of revs.
And I'm not worried about whether I can do it on my driveway. I've had the head off twice and changed the clutch on my own last week. So I'm not scared to pull it apart and rebuild it properly.

As for my list, if I'm going k04 hybrid.

255 in line pump, 550cc injectors, rods, 3" maf housing, plumbing intake/exhaust and a new clutch when it shreds the new standard one Tongue

Then maybe start with this.

compression ratio and clutch should be changed when going bigger than k04something

So maybe start with rods and use your old turbo. This will save you money if the rod change will end in a broken engine with metal in the oil and everywhere.

small steps

setup and turbosize depends on what you like and what roads you have where you live.
maybe find a gt30 size car nearby and go for a testride?

Unfortunately I live in North Wales. There aren't any big turbo 1.8t's around here, and with the Draconian laws in place here because of all the tourists. I can't even travel locally.

Rod's will definitely be a priority if I do go big turbo, and like you said it will also drop c.r.

I'll give you some info on what I'm looking for if you think it will help people to help me make the right choice.

To be honest my car is pretty perfect for me and my driving style. I'm not one of these people who throws his car into the bends at 100+ mph, and I barely break the speed limit. I just like how fast it rips from 0-100 but it's lacking that oomph after 5k rpm. The more I think about it the more I feel I'm left with 2 options.

Buy a standard k04 and 225 injectors and if needed the 3" maf housing. This way I could copy over the injector and compressor maps and could tune it myself, with a little help from the forums for re-scaling my MAF.

Or do the same with a k04 Hybrid, which I know would require rods, bigger fuel pump, and probably 550's. On top of everything else required for a standard k04.

2.0 stroker with CR9.0
K04-064
550-630cc bosch injectors
TT225 maf
dw65 or OSIAS bolt-on fuel pump

super smooth city option

you dont need gt30, forget about

I will definitely be looking in to this. Am I right in thinking that setup would be with a standard 064 and not a hybrid. And of course I will be doing rods and clutch first if I take this option. Thank you.

Just done some research on the Stroker kit. £1000 for a Crankshaft. Oof.

You'd get a 2.0L crank for less - you can get MK5 GTIs for 3k now.

Personally, if I had the money to build a sub 400bhp 1.8t, I'd buy a MK5 GTi and K04 that instead.  More torque, more toys, more handling, more parts, more better.

1.8t K04s are a waste of time, are are hybrids.  GT28 is a waste of time IMO, too slow to spool and IMO the K04-064 (from the TFSI (!)) is superior.  Having daily'd one for 3 years, I loved it.  Low down torque was amazing (not ED30 levels) and it ripped through 3rd.

If you don't break the speed limit and 0-100 is your thing, a 1.8t K04 is good for you.  The 064 will tear through 1st, 2nd and some of 3rd in the DRY.

Sub 400 is acheiveable on a 3" MAF but I was out of MAF (3") on an 064.  I was also close to injector limits on 630s.

I sold my entire 064 setup (turbo, downpipe, cooler pipework, forged bottom end, gearbox, EVERYTHING) for 500.  I wanted rid.  It is do-able cheap and it ripped.  But fuck 1.8ts, VR6 is where it's at.

Thank you for all the advice so far. This is why I love this forum. And if it wasn't for the time and patience given by people like you. I don't think I'd even still be in to cars.

When I first got the car it was a mess. Warped cylinder head, worn springs, lacquer peel everywhere, more worn out parts than working ones.
Since then I've done it all and now it's a really nice car and I've fallen in love with it. It pulls really well and with the help of you guys. I managed to plug it in myself and I'm running around 20 psi with a hard cut at 7k and some lovely sounding overrun pops.

I'm just getting used to the power I think, which is why I'm contemplating bigger turbos.

I've installed a 3" decat downpipe, but I haven't done a front mount yet. So I figured I'm in a good position to pick up a second hand k04 and some 225 injectors. They even do an adaptor to make my downpipe fit the k04, and I already know I can copy over the 225 injector map into my 180. So I'm not worried about that either.

My main concern is that I wont be able to scale my maf into a 3" housing. And if I'm taking it somewhere to be done properly, then I might as well do the rods as well so they can really turn it up.
I always thought that the k04 ran out of puff at around 285 bhp or so. But I was talking to a guy on the seat forums and he has a 225 with rods and 550 injectors, and he came out of an R-Tech session with 309 bhp. So I guess the injectors run out of duty before the turbo does. Btw, it was an original 15 year old k04, not a new one or a hybrid.

No front mount, 20psi and in Wales (+20 degrees?).  Knock knock...

You can scale a MAF fine, it's one table and can be copied from a BAM file.

309bhp is unusual, they usually fall off after 285ish.  It must have been a good setup, which (without being rude), yours doesn't.
